

He is survived by daughter, Lori Douglas of Irving, Texas; son, John Funk of Hoover; five grandchildren, Alan, Claudia, and Trace McGill, all three of Pelham, Alabama, Cameron Douglas of Irving, and PFC Blake Douglas, currently stationed in South Korea; sisters, Faye Spear of Lynchburg, Virginia and Kathryn Ingram of Flower Mound, Texas; and numerous nieces and nephews across this great country and abroad.
Dave is preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Judy, and his eldest daughter, Alison McGill.
He was born in Fort Bragg, North Carolina on July 17, 1936 to Carl and Lucy Moore Funk. After a few years on various military bases, including Honolulu, Hawaii during the bombing of Pearl Harbor, the family was sent stateside to Chesterfield, South Carolina to live with Dave's maternal grandmother. After his dad retired from the U.S. Army, the Funk family settled in Buckroe Beach, Virginia. Dave graduated from Hampton High School in 1954 and received the Bachelor of Science Degree in Architectural Engineering from Virginia Polytechnic Institute in June 1958.
Dave was a Corp of Cadet in college, servicing in the Army and the Reserved National Guard from 1958 - 1974, retiring as captain.
He met the love of his life, Claudia Judith (Judy) Smith, while lifeguarding at Fort Morgan, VA in 1955. They married August 8, 1957. After college, Dave and Judy returned to Alabama, where Judy grew up, settling in the Birmingham area. He was a caring, supportive and steady father and loved nothing more than spending time with his children and later his grandchildren.
Dave’s career as a Structural Engineer started with Wilmore, Hudson & Luke, in 1961. When Mr. Wilmore died in 1967, the firm changed its name to Hudson and Associates, Inc. which became Hudson, Ball, Funk, & Marlin over the years as associates and principals came on broad. He started his own firm David Funk & Associates in July 1978. Later this company became David Funk Engineering in May of 1989. Dave never really retired; he just reduced his hours and responsibilities within the company. He still had daily input into the running of the business.
He is a life-long member of the Elks Lodge and had a great passion for golf as well as tennis and bridge. He served on The Oaks HOA as a committee and board member for many years.
Services will be held at Southern Heritage Funeral Home on July 17, 2021 from 11:00 am – 1:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the Aldridge Gardens, 3530 Lorna Rd, Hoover, AL 35216
