Owen attended Mississippi State University and Western Kentucky University before serving four years in the U.S. Air Force. His professional career spanned around 40 years of employment in Information Technology (IT) with AT&T until his retirement. In his leisure, he enjoyed serving at Indian Springs First Baptist Church as a deacon, helping with IT needs, doing repairs, and helping in any other way he could. He also spent a lot of his free time finding new gadgets and tinkering with electronics.
Owen was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Joyce Atkins Conn. Survivors include Owen's wife, Glynda Birdsong Atkins; three children, Timothy Lawrence Atkins (Laura Lamb Atkins), Amy Atkins Bell (Roger Gerald Bell), and Jeffrey Scott Atkins (Heather Blanton Atkins); grandchildren, Emily, John, and Amanda Atkins, Daniel and Kaitlyn Bell, and Hannah Dodson (Dallas), Hayley Reeves (Luke), Cole Atkins, Mary Grace Atkins, and Addi Joy Atkins; and great-grandchildren, Jayden, Brayden, and Baylor Reeves.
There will be a private graveside service with family held on February 7, 2023. Flowers can be sent to Ridout's Southern Heritage Funeral Home in Pelham, Alabama or donations may be made to Indian Springs First Baptist Church in memory of Owen Atkins.
