

Pat was known for her love of nature and above all else her love for her family. She was known as a wife, a mother and mother-in-law and was known as Honey to her grandchildren, whom she loved fiercely. She was always surrounded by friends and appreciated nature as an art form.
Pat was born in Fayette, AL on January 23, 1948 to parents Floyd Hughes and Allie Faye Lindsey Hughes. She was born and raised on the family farm in north Tuscaloosa County and graduated from Northside High School. She matriculated at Huntington College and received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Birmingham-Southern College. She was married to Bob on April 19, 1969 in Nuremburg, Germany.
Pat is survived by her husband, Robert Paul Sholund; two children, Christon Sholund Segal (Brian), and Jennifer Leigh Sholund (Brian McCarthy); and three grandsons, Andrew Jacob Segal, Jack Henry Segal and Zachary Sholund Brouillette. She is also survived by brother, Floyd Hughes, Jr. (Faye). On the same day as her death, her sister, Brenda Hughes Gibson also passed away. She will also be missed by her four nephews and four nieces and their spouses and children. Pat was blessed with a large family and will be missed by many more cousins and extended family and friends.
Pat was preceded in death by her father, Floyd Hughes; her mother, Allie Faye Lindsey Hughes, her brothers Franklin Hughes and Douglas Hughes.
Pat loved hiking, gardening, traveling with Bob and family and researching genealogy with her sister Brenda. She was a member of the Alabama Wildflower Society – Blanche Dean Chapter and the Birmingham Genealogy Society. She was a volunteer with numerous organizations and dedicated her career to working in the non-profit sector.
Visitation and Celebration of Life will be held Sunday, September 19, 2021 at Southern Heritage Funeral Home at 475 Cahaba Valley Road, Pelham, AL 35124. Visitation from 2 – 4 p.m. Private graveside service will be held at the Alabama National Cemetery in Montevallo, AL.
In lieu of flowers, we ask family and friends to bring a flower or greenery from their garden to honor Pat’s love of nature. Charitable memorial donations can be made for the dedication of a tree to the Birmingham Botanical Gardens, 2612 Lane Park Road, Birmingham, AL 35223.
