He was a native, long-time resident, successful businessman, and highly respected volunteer in the Birmingham, AL area.
The celebration of Bob Brady's life and legacy will include visitation from 5-7 p.m. on Saturday, February 20, 2016 at Ridout's Southern Heritage Funeral Home in Pelham, AL. The 2 p.m. funeral service will be on Sunday, February 21, 2016 at Ridout's Southern Heritage Chapel, Pelham, immediately followed by the burial at Oakland Cemetery, Birmingham.
Bob was predeceased by his parents, Lola Bell Shafer Brady and James U. Brady; a daughter, Donna Carol Brady; and siblings, Lucille Brady McCarter, Aleene Brady Wheless, Wynelle Brady Denny, and James U. Brady, Jr.
Survivors include Bob's loving wife of 64 years, Carolyn Ford Brady; one son, Robert H. "Bobby" Brady, Jr. (Jan); two grandchildren, Robert "Trey" Brady III and Katie Brady Hubbard (Robert); and one great-grandchild, Robert H. "Robby" Hubbard III.
Bob graduated from Ensley High School after serving in the U.S. Navy. He was a Fireman 1st Class and electrician aboard the USS Springfield CL66 in the Asiatic Pacific during WWII, and earned the Bronze Star Medal.
He retired from Bell South with 45 years, the last three years serving as president of Communication Workers of America (CWA) Local 3902. Previously, he served 12 years as vice president of his CWA. In the 1950s, he spent three years in Alaska installing radar defense systems for the U.S. Government.
In addition to his memberships in the American Legion, Lions Club, and Masonic Lodge 808, Bob was a 32 degree Scottish Rite Shriner, Zamora Temple. The Palisades Church of Christ member was also an Honorary Jefferson County Sheriff and an Honorary Alabama Highway Patrol.
Perhaps, however, Bob was proudest of the many lives he touched in his 11 years of volunteer service as co-founder and president of the Western Youth Athletic Christian Association. He avidly supported the youth of the western section of Birmingham through athletics while working in and around Ensley to fund scholarships for young people to coach and train their peers.
