Robert Gene Ramsay, 53, of Gardendale, Alabama celebrated his Victory Day on March 22, 2023 surrounded by family. Gene, who was born in Houston, Texas and spent his childhood in Clarion, Iowa, graduated from the University of Montevallo, Alabama with a degree in music education. He was married to Julie Dianne Nicks Ramsay, his high school sweetheart, for over 30 years.
During his life, Gene’s steadfast faith in God led him to positively embrace all challenges and opportunities, often using these times to serve others and bring joy to their lives. While Gene was awarded and honored in the health and life insurance industry many times, what he was most focused on was the opportunity it gave him to serve others when they faced traumatic life-changing events.
Gene’s love of music found its way into all aspects of his life. He regularly found opportunities to put his 43 years of experience of playing the trumpet to work. Any time you saw Gene he was either playing, writing, singing, or listening to music of all genres. In his pursuit to combine his passion for serving others and music, he joined Bugles Across America, which provides live Taps for military funerals. He provided live Taps for hundreds of military families and actively promoted the work of celebrating, recognizing, and supporting veterans and their families.
To know Gene is to know how fiercely he loved others, celebrated life, and created fun along the way. The adventures that he and Julie took, both far and near, sound like something out of an epic adventure story, one filled with love, laughter and the outdoors. He turned even the most mundane of tasks into games and truly loved playing all kinds of games, especially with his nieces. His creativity knew no bounds as he composed songs, poetry and short stories as well as being a talented artist focusing mainly on his love for superheroes.
Gene’s family and friends would like to express our deep felt gratitude for the Hematology Oncology Specialty Unit at UAB Medicine who fought alongside us, laughed with us, danced with us and celebrated with us as part of our family. We express further appreciation and admiration for the MICU “swim team” who poured themselves into our battle and the second-to-none Palliative Care Unit who loved on all of us as Gene neared and celebrated his Victory Day.
Those who will continue to celebrate Robert Gene Ramsay’s incredible, joy-filled life are his best friend and wife, Julie; his sisters, Amanda Arnold, Stephanie Moody, and Jennifer Nicks; his brothers, Frank Newton and Bryan Moody; his nieces, Annalise, Alaina, and Aimee Moody, and Allison and Abigail Kepler; and his nephew, Allan Kepler.
Gene's family will greet friends at Ridout's Southern Heritage Funeral Home in Pelham, Alabama on Tuesday, March 28, 2023 from 4-6 p.m., followed by A Celebration of Life Service at 6 p.m. at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations are made in his Robert Gene Ramsay's name to The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, www.lls.org.
