MORRIS, ROBERT E., JR., of McLean, Virginia, passed away December 29, 2013.
Visitation will be from 2-3 p.m. on Saturday, January 4, 2014 at Asbury United Methodist Church located at 6690 Cahaba Valley Road in Birmingham, Alabama. The 3 p.m. funeral at Asbury will immediately follow the visitation. A memorial service will be held in Washington D.C. at a time to be determined.
Rob was born on March 27, 1960 and graduated from Brookstone High School in Columbus, Georgia, in the Class of ’78. He went on to graduate from Auburn University with a Professional Degree in Architecture in 1984.
While Rob was in high school, he and his family moved to a home built in 1936 in the historic district of Columbus. He was so influenced by that home that he often spoke of it as "the house that built him." After graduating from Auburn, Rob moved to Washington, D.C., to pursue his dream of designing and building traditional arts and crafts style homes. Within a few years, he founded Morris-Day Architects and Builders. He became a renowned builder in Northern Virginia, Washington D.C., and Maryland, specializing in estate homes, cottages, and significant renovations to older homes.
After 25 years of practice, Rob's designs have won more than a dozen prestigious awards for design excellence, including the NARI Metro DC Chapter Merit Award, "Contractor of the Year," and many Arlington County Preservation Design Awards. Rob and his Morris-Day projects were featured in over 25 national magazines, including Southern Living, Better Homes and Gardens, and The Washington Post. Morris-Day projects were featured in local publications that highlighted the artistic yet practical approaches to renovation and design applied by the company.
Rob turned houses into homes and built them to bring families and friends closer; they were living works of art. He designed his homes to facilitate one of his favorite pastimes, entertaining friends and hosting parties. Through his boundless creativity, dedication, and enthusiasm for the ideals that he held dear, he left his community and this world a better place than when he entered it. Generous, smart, and with a relentless sense of humor and charm, he will be deeply missed.
Rob was preceded in death by his father, Robert Earl Morris, Sr. Survivors include Rob's mother, Billie Morris; brothers, John Michael Morris (Lisa), Keith Bryant Morris (Jennifer), and Charles Dana Morris (Lyn); nieces, Claire Morris, Cameron Morris, and Delayna Morris; nephew, Jackson Morris; aunt, Peggy Rawls; uncle, Bart Costello, Jr.; and cousins, Amy Reese, Chad Rawls, Anita Costello, and Bart Costello III.
