Beloved wife, mother and grandmother, Ruth Ann Shaughnessy Hayes passed away after a two and one half year battle with ovarian cancer on January 15, 2013. She was born September 15, 1954 in Washington D.C. to Richard and Loudella Shaughnessy. She attended Lee High School and then the University of Alabama in Huntsville Alabama. Her final two years of college were spent at Auburn University. It was at Auburn where she was involved in The Navigators and Campus Crusade for Christ that her relationship with Christ blossomed. She graduated in 1976 from Auburn University and then accepted a programming job with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Alabama. She spent many years as a member of Briarwood Presbyterian Church and the last six years with Oak Mountain Presbyterian Church. She loved reading, trips to the beach and crossword puzzles. However her joy in life was her relationships with her daughters and granddaughter. She retired in May of 2012 from a 35 year career as a programmer/systems analyst. Ruth’s true testament was her daily walk with Christ and her strong faith. She believed in living her life daily so that others could see Christ in her. She was preceded in death by her father Richard J. Shaughnessy and brother Richard Shaughnessy. She is survived by her husband, Jeff Hayes; daughters Stephanie Renee Hayes and Rebecca Caroline Blevins; Granddaughter MaryJane Blevins; Mother, Loudella Shaughnessy; Brother, Michael Shaughnessy; sister, Janet Young. Visitation will be at Southern Heritage Pelham, Alabama from 12:00 to 2:00 pm Friday January 18, 2013. Memorial service will follow at 2:00 pm with Bob Flayhart officiating. We wish to thank Dr. Ronald Alvarez for his tireless work on Ruth’s Behalf trying every option to beat this dreaded disease of ovarian cancer. We would also like to thank his staff, the chemo nurses and the hospital nurses who all have become family to us over the last two and one half years. In lieu of flowers the family request that donations be made to Camp Sumatanga, or The Navigators, or Laura Crandall Brown Ovarian Cancer Foundation.
