Samuel Joseph Pillitteri passed away on Thursday, April 2, 2020 at the age of 93. Sam, formerly of Bessemer Alabama, resided in Columbiana. He was born in Birmingham, Alabama on December 1,1926 and attended Phillips High School. He served in the United States Air Force and was Owner/Operator of Food Giant grocery stores. He was a member of St. Peters Catholic Church.
Survivors include his daughters Mary Ann Pillitteri, Sandra Ann Gilmour (Bill), Joanna Rumbley. Grandchildren Chris Davis (Leigh), Julie Strange (Clint), Lauren Davis, Maggie Rumbley, Anna Leigh Rumbley, Lily Rumbley, Lucy Rumbley. Great Grandchildren Mary Margaret Strange, Samuel Bennett Strange, Griffith Davis Strange, Alexandra Davis, and Jackson Pillitteri Davis, sister, Mary Jo Pizzitola and Special Friend Linda Vance.
“Mr. Sam”, as he was known by many, loved his house on the river, fishing, golf and Alabama football. More importantly, he loved the people that he surrounded himself with throughout his life. He had a work ethic that served as an example to everyone who knew him. But above all, was his love for his family.
He was preceded in death by his wife Mary Jo Miller; parents, Joseph and Annie Pillitteri; son, Thomas Joseph Pillitteri and sister, Ann Marie Corona.
A private Service will be held at St. Peters Columbarium and Memorial Garden. Due to these challenging times, a memorial service will be held at a later date and a celebration of his life will follow. In lieu of flowers the family has requested that donations can be made to St. Peters Building Fund, Hoover, AL or Dominican Monastery of St. Jude, Marbury, AL.
