

Sean Edward Richardson, 53, of Birmingham, Alabama, passed away on January 11, 2026, following a courageous battle with Sarcoma Cancer. He faced his illness with the same strength and resilience that defined his life.
Born on March 23, 1972 in Detroit, Michigan to Madelyn Richardson Smith and James Thomas Richardson, Sean lived a life devoted to service and forming lasting relationships. He moved with his family to Bluff Park, Alabama in August of 1980, attended Bluff Park Elementary, Simmons Junior High and graduated from W.A. Berry High School in 1990.
Following graduation, he enlisted in the United States Army where he proudly served his country for 12 years. Specifically, he served as an active-duty member of the 82nd Airborne Division from 1991-1994. During his military service, he earned the distinction of serving as a Jumpmaster and graduated from Ranger School, accomplishments that reflected his exceptional commitment, leadership, mental and physical toughness. Following his honorable discharge from the Army, Sean continued living in Italy where he worked for the United States Department of Defense prior to working for ArmorGroup International, which paved the way for his return to Alabama.
Continuing his commitment to service, Sean pursued a career in law enforcement with Vestavia Hills Police Department, where he had the opportunity to work in various areas including Patrol and Undercover Narcotics. One of his proudest achievements was his role in the creation of the SWAT Team. While working at Vestavia Hills Police Department, Sean met the love of his life, Kristie Shew Richardson. They were married on February 1, 2010. Sean retired from Vestavia Hills Police Department in 2024 due to complications related to his cancer diagnosis. His entire career was marked by integrity, dedication, and a deep respect for the community he served.
Beyond his distinguished career, Sean was one of the funniest and most personable people. He had an effortless way of making others laugh and feel at ease. He had a rare gift for storytelling and took immense joy in sharing stories, whether recounting moments from his time in the Army, his years in law enforcement, or the everyday adventures in life. Outside of work, Sean found great happiness on the golf course, where his love for the game led to countless memories and the formation of lifelong friendships. A devoted friend to all, he deeply valued each relationship in his life and took great care in showing up for the people he loved. His loyalty, warmth, and genuine interest in others left an impression on everyone he encountered. Throughout his battle with cancer, Sean remained courageous and steadfast, meeting each day with strength and a positive attitude. His perseverance during this time reflects the character he carried throughout his life.
He is survived by his wife, Kristie Richardson, mother, Madelyn Smith (Larry), sister, Shannon Raine (Andy), Caroline and Andrew, cousin/sister, Tiffany Marchesan, step-brother, Andy Smith (Missy), Jackson, Sullivan and Grayson, step-sister, Alison Huskey (Ron), Madison, Julia and Eli, sister-in-law, Debbie Ceravolo (Joe), Lacey, sister-in-law, Glenda MacNeill (Bruce Sr.), Bruce, Jr. and Katie, sister-in-law, Linda Free (Jeff) Chad, brother-in-law, Bill Shew (Sandra), Brian, Jon and Brad, as well as numerous cousins, great nieces and great nephews, all of whom will always remember his love, humor, and steadfast support. He was preceded in death by his father, James Richardson, as well as his grandparents, Mae and Edward Brown.
Sean will be remembered for his service, his strength, and most of all, his heart. His legacy lives on in the countless friendships he nurtured, the community he served, and the laughter he so freely shared.
The Funeral will be held on Wednesday, January 21, 2026 at Shades Mountain Baptist Church, 2017 Columbiana Rd. Birmingham, AL 35216. Visitation will be held from 8:30-10:00, Service 10:00-11:00, Graveside Service at Alabama National Cemetery in Montevallo at 12:30.
