Shannon Smith Lackey, 63, of Chelsea, Alabama, passed peacefully into the arms of her Savior on October 12, 2025, surrounded by her loving family. To know Shannon was to know kindness, faith, and a love that reached everyone around her. She had a gentle spirit, a joyful laugh, and a heart that always made space for others.
Born on August 5, 1962, in Cullman, Alabama, Shannon was the cherished daughter of Lawrence and Mary Smith. She grew up in Mobile, where she spent her childhood enjoying life’s simple pleasures—roller skating with friends, browsing antique shops, and visiting the bay with her family. Those days by the water and in the heart of her hometown shaped her deep appreciation for connection, family, and the beauty of everyday moments.
A proud graduate of Independent Methodist School in Mobile, Shannon went on to earn her Bachelor’s Degree in Education from Cameron University in Lawton, Oklahoma. She followed her calling as an elementary school teacher, spending more than 20 years touching the lives of her students across multiple states. Her warmth, patience, and steady encouragement left a lasting impression on countless children and families.
In 1981, Shannon married the love of her life, Retired Colonel James “Jim” Lackey, beginning a 44-year marriage built on love, faith, and shared purpose. As a devoted military spouse for 30 years, she served quietly but powerfully—providing strength, stability, and comfort through 12 duty stations across the country and abroad. No matter where the Army sent them, Shannon created a home full of faith, laughter, and love.
Shannon was a faithful member of Mount Olive Baptist Church in Coker, Alabama, and an active participant in the Sew Blessed Ministry. Her hands were rarely still—whether she was quilting, sewing, or crafting thoughtful gifts for family and friends. Her creativity was a reflection of her heart: generous, detailed, and full of love.
Of all her roles, “Nana” was her favorite. Her 19 grandchildren were the light of her life, and she cherished every moment spent with them. Summers were marked by her beloved Nana Camps—days filled with crafts, games, stories, and laughter that became treasured memories for all her grandchildren. Holidays at Nana and Opa's house were equally special, complete with traditions, games, and her warm touch that made everyone feel at home.
Shannon loved traveling and especially enjoyed cruising with Jim, exploring new places, and collecting memories along the way. She found joy in Christian music, comfort in Hallmark movies, and peace in her faith. She lived each day with gratitude and grace, leaving a legacy of love that will endure through the family she cherished.
She is survived by her husband, Jim Lackey; her four children, Rob (Lynn) of Chelsea, Jennifer (Matt) of Sterrett, Ryan (Chezleigh) of Chelsea, and Daniel (Kaitlin) of Senoia, Georgia; and her 19 beloved grandchildren—Adi, Colin, Nolan, Evan, Logan Kate, Emmaleigh, Austin, Riley, Leighton, Beckett, Landrey, Audrey, Greyson, Colby, Patton, Landen, Rory, Millie, and Natalie. She is also survived by her brothers Bruce (Mary), Frankie (Julie), and Lee, and her sister Cindy.
She was preceded in death by her loving parents, Lawrence and Mary Smith, and her sister Laura Smith.
Shannon will be remembered for her faith, her laughter, and the unconditional love she shared so freely. Her family finds comfort in knowing she is home at last, and that her beautiful spirit will continue to live on in the lives of those she loved.
“For we walk by faith, not by sight.” — 2 Corinthians 5:7
