She was born on December 24, 1934, in Birmingham, Alabama to Otis Douglas Ellard and Lucile Day Ellard. Sue graduated from Woodlawn High School and was in five Honor Societies. She was also Senior Class Editor of the Woodlog Yearbook and went to Girls State, where she was elected State Auditor. She graduated from Auburn University with a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education and was a member of Kappa Delta Pi, an Education Honorary. She was also in the Phi Mu social Fraternity.
Sue met her husband, Harold Lindbergh "Lindy" Martin, while they were both working on the staff at Ridgecrest Baptist Assembly in Ridgecrest, North Carolina. They were married on June 11, 1955, and celebrated 62 years of marriage.
During her first teaching job at Lee County Elementary School, she completed her Masters of Education in Elementary Education at Auburn University. She later taught at Edgewood Elementary in Homewood. She taught preschool at Dawson Baptist Church for nine years. She earned her Educational Specialist (EdS) in Early Childhood Education from Samford University and was invited to join Phi Kappa Phi, a Scholarship Honorary. Next, Sue taught kindergarten at Brookwood Forest Elementary School for 21 years before retiring. She was a member and served in many ways in church life at Dawson Memorial Baptist Church and later at Mountain Brook Baptist Church, where she was a member of the Torchbearers Sunday School Class. While Lindy was on Administrative Faculty at Samford University, she served as a member and officer of the Samford Faculty Women's Club (later known as the Samford Legacy League). She was also a member and officer of the Shades Mountain Music Club.
Sue was a dedicated daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and caregiver who also loved children, baking, music, and traveling. Sue is predeceased by her parents and her husband. She is survived by her six children: John Lindbergh Ellard Martin (Sally), Sue Ellin Martin-Curley, Lumary Elizabeth Papageorgiou (Dimitrios), LeighFran Martin Jones (Warren), David Douglas Martin (Nicole), and Daniel Christopher Charles Martin, twelve grandchildren: Drexel Martin (Caitlin), Alexandra Martin Dillard (Keenan), Melanie Curley Chakwin (Joey), Chris Curley, Mary Katie Papageorgiou, Benjamin Jones, Linley Jones Frye (George), Julian Martin, Isabella Martin, Ilsa Martin, Hawkins Martin, and Zella Martin, and one great-grandchild, Fox Frye.
The funeral service will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, April 17 at Mountain Brook Baptist Church with visitation following. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made in her honor to the MBBC Missions to Moldova fund or to 10/40 Connections.
