Sue Simpson, 94, of Hoover, passed away on Sunday, March 30, 2025. Sue was born in Florala, AL on November 30, 1930. She graduated from Andalusia High School and received a bachelor’s degree in library science from the University of Alabama. Sue was married to Charlie Simpson for 64 years, until his death in 2018.
Sue was a lover of books, both in her work and in her free time. In her career as a librarian, she worked in high school libraries, established and ran two different church libraries, and served as the Circulation Manager at the Hoover Public Library for a number of years. After retirement, she continued to actively support the library through her work at the Friends of the Hoover Library Bookstore and was honored in 2023 for her 24 years of volunteer service. She went on to help run the library at the Galleria Woods Senior Living Community after moving there in 2018. She was an avid reader and always had a book nearby to pass the time. Sue enjoyed traveling with her husband, playing Bunco in a neighborhood league, and bingo with friends. She loved Jeopardy and trivia questions and enjoyed game shows. She was an independent spirit with decided opinions, but with the Southern charm to express them in a way that didn’t offend others.
Mrs. Simpson is preceded in death by her parents Modie and Esther Cannon, and her husband Charlie Simpson; survived by her sister, Janette Newton; daughter Sue Ellen Williams; sons, Charles Simpson, Jr. and Timothy Simpson; and grandchildren, Ben Williams and Bryan Williams.
The celebration of Sue’s life will be at 11 am on Friday, April 4, 2025, at Southern Heritage Funeral Home in Pelham, with visitation beginning at 10 am.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Alzheimer’s charities.
