Barry represented my son many times in Drug court. He was a VERY kind and caring person, who honestly cared for my drug addicted son. 
Please know you are all in my thoughts and prayers, and may Barry rest in peace.

He was SO AWESOME to my son who has suffered for 26 years with addiction. I never had the pleasure of meeting him, but he was ALWAYS there for my son. You all are in my thoughts and prayers and KNOW that he TRULY cared for these addicts🙏🏻

Before I worked in the Court system, my mom, Nora Cook, would tell me how much respect she had for Barry.  They had clients in common.  When I met Barry close to thirty years ago, I understood immediately what she had always expressed.  A great honor and blessing is to be told, “I value your opinion.”  We had a few talks over the years, and that is what he always told me.  Thank you, my friend.  We will all treasure our time with you.  We will see you again one day, and I thank God that He has assured us of that.  

I would like to express my sincere sympathy to the Alvis family. Barry was a great neighbor and will certainly be missed. I know he is in Heaven greeting all of those that have gone on before us to be our Heavenly Father.

I met Barry and Lara in the spring of 2005.  They were law partners. I had just been accepted to law school. I had the privilege of watching them work together preparing for court and then later representing a case. I learned so much about the legal system from them! Barry would always say, “There’s a lot of innocent people who go to prison”.  It was a truth that bothered him and caused him to work even harder to help those whom he felt like were being “railroaded”.  I learned about motions and the process of striking a jury.. I watched them plead their case with determination.!  They won that case working together with such harmony that it made the hard work look easy. I fell in love with them! Later, they fell in love with each other and their beautiful bond led them to marriage, two children, grand children and the birth of a judgeship for Lara.  Barry was so proud! That was another beautiful milestone. I saw an entire family work together to make that dream a reality.  Kyle Alvis was a great campaigner, always supportive . Barry was proud of his family and all of the accomplishment. I was glad to be a part of that celebration. 
I saw hard work pay off. I saw passion and drive in everything they did.  They were successful both in a courtroom and in their personal lives. It was a love story that happened to two deserving people!  Maggie & Barrett,  it’s not fair. He left this world too soon but you were blessed to have the best parents ever and they love you so much! 
Barry was a great person whom I will never forget! His memory I shall cherish. My life is better for having known him and this entire beautiful family!  You all will remain in my thoughts and prayers. ♥️🕊🙏🏻

Barry plucked me from circuit criminal court and gave me my first legal secretary job.  It was working for him that made me fall in love with law.  He was always so passionate in helping people. He cared, he gave so much of himself and his time.   He was truly one of a kind.   Quick with a joke and a laugh.  Barry, your passion and kindness will never be forgotten.  Rest easy my sweet friend.  You will be truly missed.

I tried my first jury trial against Barry.  DUI misdemeanor appeal.   I remember feeling intimidated and terrified about being able to do the job.  It was a blessing to me that Barry Alvis was my first opponent.   At every break, he made sure to compliment me on the way I was handling myself in the courtroom.  I don't know if he really thought I was doing a good job, but he knew that it was my first trial.  I think he was almost as concerned about giving me confidence as a young trial attorney as he was about zealously representing his client.  Barry was a kind man who genuinely cared about the people around him.  We will miss him dearly.    

There is just no way to adequately describe my feelings about Barry Alvis. He has always been there for me as a very strong advocate and a great friend. No matter how serious the legal situation, Barry would just stand up, run his hand through his hair, and say "I will see what I can do."
You will be missed Barry in so many ways; as an Attorney, friend, husband, father and grandfather. 
May God Bless your beautiful family that I have been so Blessed to get to know and love. You will be missed in this world but we will all get to hug you again when we meet you in Heaven. Love to you forever.

I only met Barry one time.  It was the afternoon of a fundraiser,  being held at Our Lady of the Valley social hall,  for his wife’s campaign.  I remember being  a bit timid at the thought of meeting Barry.  All I knew is that he was a powerful, prominent attorney.  Little did I know, as I soon found out upon being introduced to him, that he was the most kind, approachable human being who spent time to talk to me and learn a little bit about me, even though we were all hustling trying to get things set up.  He was so easy going and calm and relaxed and even made a joke about his wife being “so stressed out.  I mean it’s only a chance to become a judge, why  is she so worked up?”    
May God bless you all and may you cherish all the memories of a very special nan. 

I met Barry in 2009 at the Shelby County Courthouse and was a little intimidated because I knew him by reputation as a well-respected attorney and strong advocate.  He was immediately friendly and kind.  The kindness and the friendliness just exuded from his person.  A short time later I met Lara and, of course, liked her too.  The next time I saw Barry, I told him that I had met his sweet wife; his immediate response was, “she’s definitely the better one in the marriage, she takes a bath and everything!”  That was always Barry:  light-hearted, proud of his children and adoring of his wife.   When he’d speak of his family, he may joke or tell some amusing anecdote but there was a twinkle in his eye that told you that they were his world.  I will miss him dearly and I’m so blessed to have known him.

Barry represented me and other family members on several occasions.  He was great at his job and obviously had a huge heart and was a family man. He was not your typical lawyer and he always made me feel more like a friend. When I’d see him out at a concert or other public event, he always waved and said hello. I feel like he truly cared about his clients as people, not just a case. My heart goes out to his family during this time of grieving. Barry was a good man and will definitely be missed by so many! 

I met Barry January, 1981 when we both started Law School.   We were study partners for 4 years including for the Bar Exam.   He was a wonderful, generous, kind, funny, decent person; among the finest I’ve ever known.   He helped so many people and everyone loved him.   He died way too soon,  but his memory will endure and his legacy is assured by his wonderful family.   God bless you, Barry.   See you again one day.

Knew Barry from Huffman High School, class of '74. Very good guy and so kind to others who met him.  Didn't see him again until a 40 year reunion in 2014 at the Regions Field in Birmingham, AL. 
Very busy and exciting time for the reunion with seeing him and all my other friends from school and the neighborhood. 
He will be missed, but happily enjoying a new life in Heaven. May God watch over him.


I remember my very first time meeting Barry, he was on the little league baseball field sidelines with a nice camera in hand taking photos of his son Barrett and all the other boys on the baseball team. He always caught the most wonderful moments on the field and Lara would use those photos to make the most amazing posters and signs for the boys for special events.  We have been so blessed to have our kids on the same sports teams many times since then and feel so thankful for the time we have gotten to know Barry and his amazing family. We absolutely adore the Alvis family and think of y’all as extended family as well.  Barry pushed hard until the very last second and didn’t waste one moment creating lifelong memories for his children and family. I am so grateful for the example your family taught me about making the best of every moment. Love all of you so much!!!

I met Barry when he came on our television show, The Attorneys in March of 2013. I remember that we had such a great time talking about gun laws when i was scheduling him and of course, we were always happy to have him on and as a referring attorney to our firm. Everyone here at Hollis Wright Clay and Vail, particularly myself and Josh Wright, loved Barry. He will be sorely missed. All around great guy ready to laugh and chat anytime.  A shotgun sized hole through our hearts. Rest in Peace kind friend.


Did not know you personally but your precious wife has been a friend of my family since the 1980's.  My children and Lara attended Pelham High School together and Lara and my daughter Michelle were college roommates their Freshman year at the University of Alabama.  You must have been very special because Lara was a perfectionist and would have only chosen the very best to share her life with.   You have left the world a better place because of the way you lived your life.  Rest in peace.
