William Fredrick Martens, known by all as Bill, passed away on Sunday, December 14, 2014. He is survived by his wife of forty-one years, Patsy Martens; his four children, Will Martens (Melissa) of Birmingham; Steve Martens (Gena) of Madison, MS; Richard Martens (Jennifer) of Nashville, TN; Laurie Martens Alexander (Paul) of Chicago, IL; and his eight grandchildren with a ninth due next year.
Bill was born in the small town of Woodville, MS where his love for hunting, and appreciation of all things outdoors began. Bill attended Vanderbilt University and later enlisted in the Army, where he served in the general command of the 101st Airborne Division. After returning to Mississippi and working several years in the corporate world, Bill made the move to Birmingham and to real estate, where he spent the next forty years. The Birmingham real estate community, along with the people he worked with, will be forever impacted by his wisdom, compassion, and integrity.
His family life was no different. The same character he displayed among colleagues was loved and cherished by his family and close friends. The extent of Bill’s thoughtfulness and generosity will never be known this side of Heaven. Bill selflessly gave of himself, his time, his talents, and resources to all he knew and loved. Whether he is remembered as the best husband, most loving father, best friend, perfect Papa, best broker, best woodsman, most thoughtful, best cook, or most generous man, Bill’s knowledge, love, and instruction bettered us all.
“We love because He first loved us.” 1 John 4:19
Bill loved so well, and will be missed so dearly because he was first loved by his Heavenly Father, Whom he now sees face to face and is worshiping and enjoying forever in glory.
