

Bill was born November 29, 1950 to Evan William and Olivia Jean Prosser in Fayetteville, North Carolina, the youngest of four children. Bill is preceded in death by his parents; brother David Henry Prosser; and sister Sue Ann Newby.
Bill is survived by his loving wife of 44 years Mary Jane Erwin Prosser; daughter Jessie Gilliland (Jason); daughter Katie Courain (Rob); sister Bobbie Putney (Thom); grandson Colt Gilliland; and many other loving relatives.
Bill graduated from Waipahu High School in Waipahu, (Oahu) Hawaii in 1968, and was an avid surfer. Upon high school graduation Bill volunteered for the United States Army and served one tour of duty as an infantryman (4th US Army) in Vietnam. Bill was awarded the Bronze Star Medal and the Purple Heart, among other decorations. Bill attained the rank of sergeant at the time of his honorable discharge.
Following his military service Bill completed his undergraduate and graduate degrees from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. During the entirety of his career, Bill was dedicated to advancing inner city education in Birmingham. After 40 years of teaching, coaching, and administration, Bill retired in 2014.
In his spare time, Bill was an avid Pittsburgh sports fan, history buff, fisherman, and reader. “Poppie” enjoyed spending time with his family and shared a special bond with his grandson, Colt. Baseball fans will recognize him from the many seasons he worked for the Birmingham Barons, a job he loved. Bill was active with Mountaintop Community Church. Bill had a kind heart and unparalleled sense of humor, and will be greatly missed by many.
Memorial services will be held at 4:00 pm on Sunday July 10 at Southern Heritage Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Doug Ferguson officiating. The family will greet friends from 2:00-4:00pm at Southern Heritage Funeral Home on sunday. Graveside services will be held at Alabama National Cemetery at 11am Monday, July 10.
