Willie James Thomas

Willie graduated from Bethune High School and earned his B.S. Degree in Education from Alabama State University, his M.ED Degree in Education from Alabama State University, and his M.B.A. Degree in Marketing from Auburn University.

His professional career in Education included teaching and administrative positions in Alabama with Dallas County Schools and Selma Public Schools. He was a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Masonic Lodge, Knights of Columbus, and Alabama High School Athletic Association.

Willie was married to the former Yvonne Theresea Moore, also a professional educator in public schools, on November 15, 1963. In addition to Yvonne, survivors include Willie's three children, Erika Thomas, Sherena Mathis, and Vernon Mathis; grandchildren; one sister, Carolyn Kennedy; and two brothers, Bernard Thomas (Ann) and Gerald Thomas (Patricia).

Willie was preceded in death by his parents, Lorene Morris Thomas and James Thomas, and two of his siblings, Sharon Garrett and Dewayne Thomas.

The family will greet friends from 10-11 a.m. on Tuesday, April 19, 2022 at St. Mark the Evangelist Catholic Church in Birmingham, Alabama. Immediately following the visitation, the Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 11 a.m. at the church. Burial will be at Piedmont (Alabama) Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
