

Joe Edward Voss, 87, of Opelika, Alabama , passed away on December 21, 2025. Joe is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Donna, his daughter Andrea Griggs (Jason), brother-in-law Tommy Bain (Kyle), extended family members and many friends. Joe is preceded in death by his mother Alma Rich Skelton, step-father James Skad Skelton and father Hilber D. Voss.
Joe Ed, who served as Student Council President during his senior year in high school, held elected offices in the 10th, 11th 12th grades and was Manager of both the football and basketball teams. He was awarded the coveted Avondale Mills Scholarship to Auburn University where he acquired a degree in Engineering and Textile Management.
While at Auburn, Joe Ed was twice elected as a cheerleader. In addition to being a cheerleader, he was involved in many activities on campus which included in part: Blue Key Corresponding Secretary; two years as Homecoming Committee Chairman; Squires; Sigma Pi; Interfraternity Council; Sigma Pi Representative; Greek Week Decorations Committee; Village Fair Events Committee; Bulletin and Scheduling Committee; Student Publications Sports Writer; Jurisprudence Committee; Auburn Conference on Internal Affairs Delegate; American Association of Textile Colorists and Chemists and State of Georgia High School Cheerleader Clinic Instructor. In 1959-1960, he was included in WHO’s WHO Among Students in American Universities and Colleges.
Upon graduation from Auburn University, Joe Ed “s employment career included Avondale Mills, The Boeing Company (Huntsville and Cape Canaveral), and Lockheed Aerospace Corporation (Manhattan Beach, California)
In 1961, Joe Ed was drafted into the Army spending two years at Ft. Bliss, Texas. He entered the Army as a Private E-1 and in twenty months was promoted to Specialist Five (Sgt). While in the Army, Joe also served as a Lifeguard. His first experience as a Lifeguard was at the Pell City Swimming Pool in 1955.
Joe Ed continued his formal education at the University of Alabama in Birmingham and obtained a degree in Social and Behavioral Science and a B. A. Degree in History.
Joe was employed as a classroom instructor at Ragland, Alabama and then transferred to Ragland High School as Guidance Counselor.
Joe began working for the United States Postal Service at offices in Birmingham and Pell City. His government employment continued with the Social Security Administration - Southeastern Program Service Center, in Birmingham, from where he retired after 35 years of service.
A Celebration of Life Visitation will be 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm Sunday, January 11, 2026 at Kilgroe Funeral Home with a memorial service following at 2:00pm.
