

Rita Mae Huberty Martens, 88, of Pell City, Alabama passed away Saturday, January 12, 2019 at Kirkwood By the River in Birmingham, AL. Mrs. Martens was born November 28, 1930 in Pulaski, Wisconsin to the late Clement Huberty and Rosalie Vanderperren Huberty. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated by Monsignor Michael Sexton at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church in Pell City at 11:00 am on Saturday, February 2, 2019. The family will receive visitors starting at 10:00 prior to the service.
Mrs. Martens was a 1948 graduate of Lena (WI) High School and was employed by the Green Bay (WI) Press Gazette when she married Lawrence A. Martens (Larry) December 29, 1951. They were stationed in Greenville SC with the Air Force and then moved to Madison WI where she worked for the University of Wisconsin. Subsequently the family lived in Raleigh NC, Springfield VA, Baton Rouge LA, Champaign IL, Albany NY, and Reston VA. While rearing their family, Mrs. Martens enjoyed bridge and bowling, volunteered with the Arthritis Foundation, and was active at the Catholic churches in each community. In 1992 they retired to Pell City AL where she continued to play bridge, enjoyed traveling, and participated fully at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church.
She is survived by her husband, Larry; children, Teresa Callaway (John) of Sylacauga AL, Jill Majerus (Joe) of Leeds AL, Mary Gulin (Gary) of Clarksville TN, and Ted Martens (Garlan) of Sierra Vista AZ; nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; siblings Carl Huberty (Sandra) of Athens GA, Leah Dumke (Bob) and Joe Huberty of Green Bay WI, John Huberty (Mary Lynn) of Seaford DE; sisters-in-law Cathy Huberty and Sandra Wondrash of Lena WI, and Ginny Huberty of Green Bay WI. She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Clyde, Ken, Art and Tony; and sister-in-law Carol.
In lieu of flowers, the family request donations be made to their local hospice.
