Shirley Stevens was born Nov 9, 1959 in Pell City and died January 29, 2022. Shirley lived her whole life in Pell City’s Mill Village, and was the self-appointed Mayor of 28th Street. If you ever drove down that street, you probably saw Shirley sitting on her porch presiding over the day’s happenings. Her favorite pastime was calling neighbors to discuss anything of note. She was a 1978 graduate of Pell City High School and faithful member of Arbor Baptist Church. Born with intellectual disabilities, Shirley relied on the help of neighbors for assistance. Patsy Ford and her children and grandchildren lovingly cared for Shirley for the last 30 plus years of her life. Grandsons cut her grass, granddaughters ran errands, and Patsy’s children did whatever they could to help. Especially daughter Pam Smith who took care of Shirley until her last day. Shirley was with the Fords at every family and holiday celebration, and was a beloved member of the Ford clan. It was friends and neighbors pulling together to look after her that resulted in the quality of life Shirley had. Truly a lesson in how to care for the least of these. An example of love for someone who can do nothing in return that we need more of in this world. Shirley is survived by her church family at Arbor Baptist, the Ford family, and her friends and neighbors who loved her. To honor Shirley’s memory go out and love someone today just as they are, just where they are.
