

Shirley was born in Avoca, NY on August 20, 1926, the daughter of the late, Otto and Lena (Scotchmer) White. Before marrying her husband, Clarence Smart, Jr., she worked as a telephone operator and for Grant’s Dept. Store in Bath. She worked at the Soda Fountain where she and Clarence first met. Shirley was a member of the Branchport United Methodist Church. Shirley helped her husband Clarence as owners, build and operate the first motel in Yates County where Camp Good Days in Branchport now sits. She enjoyed ballroom dancing, painting, camping, playing cards cooking and sewing and being surrounded by her family. In addition to her parents, Shirley was predeceased by her son, Douglas O. Smart and sisters, Ruth Neufang and Virginia Andrews.
Shirley is survived by her loving and dedicated husband of 69 ½ years, Clarence Smart Jr., sons, Arnold C. (Sharon) Smart, Tharon K. (Peggy) Smart, and Steven A. (Karen) Smart; grandchildren, Dawn, Matthew, and Michael Smart and Nichole (Steven) Viglione, step grandchildren, Kevin and Kelly Stape and Matthew and Haley Mangan; seven great grandchildren, brother William(Barb) White of Idaho; former daughters-in-law, Lucille Smart and Margaret Kinch.
Shirley’s family would like to express a sincere thank you to everyone at the Homestead Nursing Home and Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hospital for the compassion, respect, and excellent care that they gave to Shirley.
In keeping with family wishes, there will be no prior calling hours or service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Shirley’s memory to the Homestead Unit 1, 418 N. Main St., Penn Yan, NY 14527 or to the Branchport United Methodist Church, 3376 Guyanoga Rd., Branchport, NY 14418.
