Allan was the oldest son of Frank A. Swagart and Frances Mary Roat. Growing up in Saint Johns, Allan developed a keen interest in aviation and engineering from a young age. This passion led him to pursue a degree in Aeronautical Engineering from Trine University (previously Tri-State College), where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree.
He married Nina Rose Petrella on February 9, 1957, and they shared a wonderful life together for 68 years. Their union was blessed with four children: Carole, Mark, Mary, and Paul. Allan and Nina built a home filled with love, laughter, and cherished memories. Allan is survived by his sister, Cheryl Moubry. He was predeceased by his younger siblings Richard Swagart, Gary Swagart, and Linda Carmon.
Allan served his country with honor in the United States Navy. He entered service on February 7, 1956, and was commissioned as an officer in June 1956. Allan earned his Navy wings in June 1957, marking the beginning of his career as a Navy Pilot. He flew the P-5 Marlin, P-3 Orion, C-45 Twin Beech and EC-121 Connie, showcasing his skill and commitment to protecting and serving his nation. Allan received an honorable discharge on June 15, 1967, with the rank of Lieutenant.
Following his military service, Allan had a distinguished career as an Aerospace Engineer at the Naval Aviation Depot NAS Pensacola for over 29 years. He was instrumental in advancing the field of naval aviation, particularly in his role as the H-2 Helicopter Engineering Branch Chief. Allan's work ensured the safety and effectiveness of naval helicopters, and he took great pride in his contributions. He retired on February 3, 1995, leaving behind a legacy of excellence and dedication.
Allan's dedication extended beyond his professional life. He was a devoted member of Saint Anne’s Catholic Church, where he found spiritual fulfillment and a sense of community. His faith was an integral part of his life, guiding him in his actions and interactions with others. Allan was also an active member of Elk’s Lodge 2787 in Navarre, FL, where he served many years as the Chaplin. His involvement in these communities was a testament to his character and his commitment to helping others.
He leaves behind a loving family: his children Carole Denise McEachern and her husband Albert McEachern; Mark Allan Swagart; Mary Frances Van Dyk and her husband Allen Van Dyk; and Paul Howard Swagart and his wife Cassandra Swagart; and his cherished grandchildren Chadrick McEachern, Tara Cerrato, Joseph Swagart, Michael Swagart, Jennifer Van Dyk, Sarah Douglas, Skyler Swagart, and Cameron Swagart; and fourteen great grandchildren. Allan was a devoted father and grandfather, always providing guidance, love, and support to his family.
His wisdom, kindness, quick wit, and dry humor will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.
A memorial service to honor Allan’s life will be held at 3:00 PM on Friday, August 8, 2025. The family will receive friends from 2:00 PM until service time. Burial will take place immediately following at Bayview Memorial Park.
