Betty was born in rural south Alabama, to Lonnie and Lula Mae Flowers. As the youngest of nine children, her job on the farm was to assist her oldest sister in preparing meals for the family. At the age of 15 she married Joe Garrett. In the 53 years of their marriage, they had three children, Patricia Glass (Marvin), Buddy Garrett (Kristi), and Larry Garrett (Laura). She was a devoted mother, enjoyed a lengthy career at Sacred Heart Hospital of over 35 years. A few years after the death of her husband she married Winston Shiver in 2013.
Betty's greatest enjoyment in life was raising her children, watching them grow, and always being part of their lives. She loved her family, her garden, music and mostly being a proud mother. In the latter years of her life, she enjoyed cruises to Alaska, the Bahamas, the Caribbean, and girls' trips to Branson, MO., visiting friends, and family around the southeast.
Betty is survived by; 1 sister, Lonice Mclendon, and 1 brother, Leon Flowers (Mary). 3 children; Patricia Elaine, Joseph David II, Larry Michael. 2 grandchildren; Christina Stevens (Baskin), Angela Hartley (Alvarez), and their spouses, 13 great grandchildren, and the pending arrival of her first great great grandson.
Predeceasing Betty in death was her parents; Lonnie and LuLa Mae, husband; Joseph David Garrett (1957-2010), husband; John Winston Shiver (2013-2021), 5 sisters (Ada, Francis, Sarah, Univae, Anne) and 1 brother (Carlton).
Pallbearers are William Baskin, JP Alvarez, Matthew Davis, Jamison Davis, Wayne Blocker, and John Garrett.
