Betty Ruth Hill Murphy, 88, passed away at her home in Silverhill, Alabama, on January 31, 2023. Betty was born in Florence, Alabama, on June 25, 1934, to her parents, Wilmer L. and Annie Mae Hill. Betty graduated from Coffee High School in Florence; upon graduating high school, she attended Murray State for one year before transferring to Livingston State College, earning a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education. While attending Livingston State, she married the love of her life of 68 years, Bobby Murphy, in 1954. Together they moved to Mobile, Alabama, to start their teaching career. Betty worked for the Mobile County Public System at Turnerville Elementary and Kate Sheppard Elementary for seven years. Betty and Bobby moved to Pensacola, where she worked for the Escambia County Public Schools, teaching in the primary grades at Scenic Heights Elementary for 39 years. Betty and Bobby raised three sons in Pensacola together before eventually moving to their dream home in Silverhill, Alabama, to live out their retirement days.
Betty is preceded in death by her parents, Wilmer L. and Annie Mae Hill, her husband of 68 years, Bobby, and her oldest son Larry Hill Murphy.
She is survived by Sons, Danny (Paula) Murphy and Frank (Wimberly) Murphy; Grandchildren, Danielle Patrick, Katelyn Murphy, Grant Murphy, and Ashlyn (Hunter) West; Great-grandchildren, Quintin Patrick and Leea Patrick; Cousin, Molly Johnson; and Nephews, Charles and Marty Murphy.
Betty’s Celebration of Life Service will be on Thursday, February 9, 2023, with a visitation at 9:00 A.M. and service at 10:00 AM. at Bayview Fisher-Pou Chapel with Pastor Riley Richardson, Myrtle Grove United Methodist Church, officiating.
