

Major George H. Ryan, USA (Ret.), died Aug.26 at home.
He spent 26 years in the Navy, reaching the rank of Lt. Commander. He was an enlisted sailor in 1936 at the age of 17 years. He was then able to go to flight school at Pensacola and got his wings of gold in 1943. He had many missions in the South Pacific during WWII.
After the war was over, he spent 2 years in the Ferry Sq. flying many different makes of planes to their destinations in many parts of the USA. He came back to Pensacola in 1951for Helicopter training. In 1960 he made a transition into the Army, to train Helicopter pilots at Fort Rucker Al. He retired in 1966 when it was discovered he had Glaucoma of the eyes. He had 30 years in service, and loved it all.
George met the love of his life, Liz, in 1972 and they married in 1973. He spent many years flying Helicopters in Alaska mostly for Geologists. When he retired in 1978, he and Liz spent many years traveling the Country and playing golf. They loved Pensacola and decided to settle down so bought a house in 2001. George was a proud member of the Silver Eagles, who were enlisted pilots and had member wings in many large Cities in the Country, Pensacola being the National Wing. He and Liz also volunteered at the Naval Aviation Museum, he in the restoration Hanger, and Liz in the Research Library, they both had over 3,000 hours.
George was preceded in death by his Father, George H. Ryan Sr. and Mother, Dorothy Lathrop Ryan; and 2 brothers, David Ryan and Donald Ryan; 2 sisters, Mary Belle Ryan and Laura Miller.
He is survived by his sister, Frances Lamphere; sisters-in law, Mae Ryan, Helen Ryan, Jody Van Nattan; and brother-in-law, Jerry Brown (Pam). He is also survived by his wife Liz; two step sons, David Huffman (Barbara) and Scott Huffman (Teresa); many step grandchildren and great grandchildren; also many beloved nieces and nephews.
The family also want to thank all the Doctors and Nurses who gave George such good care. We want to especially thank Covenant Hospice and all the wonderful nursing care given at our home by nurses Danny, Peggy, Orlando, Evelyn, Margaret, Cynthia, Katie, Eleanor, Donna and case manager, Sylvia.
