Harriet Major passed away peacefully in her sleep at home Oct 30, 2013. She was born in Pensacola, FL and was preceded in death by her husband, James Major, son Allan Major, and parents Harry and Georgia Lurton. She graduated from Pensacola High School and received her bachelor's degree from Agnes Scott College in Decatur, GA. She taught for a few years at Brentwood Elementary School before becoming a full-time homemaker. Harriet was very active in St. Christopher's Church, especially singing in the adult choir for 50 years, Friends of the Library, Pensacola Historic Preservation Society and various other charitable organizations.
Harriet is survived by her son, James Moffatt Major, Jr, daughter, Georganne Major, son and daughter-in-law Hal and Kate Major, four beautiful granddaughters, Elizabeth, Emily, Jane and Ella; sister Carolyn Bell, and numerous nieces and nephews, all of Pensacola. The family wishes to express the deepest gratitude to Delores Rudolph and Tiwana Smith for their loving care and devotion to Harriet over the past two months, and also to Covenant Hospice.
A memorial service will be held 11:00 am Monday, November 4, 2013 at St. Christopher's Episcopal Church, 3200 N. 12th Avenue. The family will receive friends after the service in the Parish Hall.
