James R. Martin

James Robert Martin, age 71, of Pensacola, Florida went home to be with his Heavenly Father on September 17, 2011

He was born July 01, 1940 in Guthrie, OK to George E. and Ada Martin. He resided in Guthrie until he joined the U.S. Navy following his graduation from Guthrie High School in 1958. During his tour of duty in the Navy, he was stationed in Pensacola, where he met his wife to be. After his discharge from the Navy, he returned to Oklahoma, where he remained until he moved to Pensacola in 1964. Upon his return to Pensacola, he worked for the City of Pensacola Water Department before going to work as an aircraft instrument mechanic at Pensacola NAS, where he remained until his retirement. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Pensacola. He was preceded in death by his parents; and brothers, Frank Martin, George Martin and Earl Martin.

He is survived by one daughter, Jill Martin Mayes (Steve) of Gulf Breeze, FL and one son, Timothy Brian Martin (Penny) of Knoxville, TN; grandchildren, Gavin Mayes, Abigail Mayes, Elena Martin and Curtis Martin; one sister, Louise Cuthbertson of Cheyenne, WY; one nephew, four nieces and his former wife and dear friend, Bonnie Alverson of Gulf Breeze, FL.

James was a good man, a gentle man, a man of few words, somewhat of a loner, but he deeply loved his family and friends and was always there for them in time of need. He will be sorely missed.

Graveside services will be held at 10:15 a.m., Thursday, September 22, 2011 at Barrancas National Cemetery with military honors.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m., Tuesday, September 20, 2011 at the funeral home.
