She was born in Columbus Junction, Iowa. She taught school there and later joined the Navy where she proudly served as a WAVE. She met and married Lemuel while both were on active duty in Jacksonville, FL.
As a longtime resident of Myrtle Grove, Katherine was a 50+ year member of the order of the Eastern Star and also active in the Myrtle Grove Women’s Club. She retired from Saufley Field after working many years in Civil Service.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Lemuel; sons, Joe L. Helms, and Thomas E. Helms. She is survived by daughter, Jean Marks (Mike) of DeBary, Fl; six grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.
Visitation will be on Tuesday, March 1, 2016 from 11:00am to 12:00pm at Oak Lawn Funeral Home. Funeral service will start at 12:00pm. Interment will follow at 1:15pm with military honors. Reception will take place back at Oak Lawn Funeral Home.
