

Mary Janette Fillingim Schiller, age 101, the Matriarch of the Fillingim Family, passed away peacefully on December 11, 2023 surrounded by family. Janette was born on September 08, 1922 to Jesse and Lillian Fillingim at the family home on Sixth Avenue here in Pensacola, Florida. She graduated from Pensacola High School. She married Joseph L. Schiller on July 04, 1942 and they were married for 29 years. She worked for the Civil Service in the personnel department at Pensacola NAS for over 32 years until she retired. She was a charter (and life-long) member of St. Mark United Methodist Church. She was a member of the United Daughters of the Confederacy.
Janette lived over 100 years on the go. She loved to travel and play games and was always the center of family get-togethers. She was a life-long resident of Pensacola and loved the beach (her brother and husband were both lifeguards there at one time). She also enjoyed fresh water recreation like boating and tubing on local rivers.
She was predeceased in death by her parents; husband, brother; Harrison Fillingim; sister-in-law, Elsie Fillingim; sister, Kathleen Fillingim Griffith; and brother-in-law, Harold Griffith; nieces, Carol Fillingim Luchsinger, Marilyn Griffith Craig and Kathy Griffith Yates.
She leaves to cherish her memories her daughters, Gayle Schiller and Pam Merrill (Dan); son, Joseph A. Schiller (Teresa) all of Pensacola, FL; grandson, Daniel J. Merrill of Atlanta, GA; many, many nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and grand-dogs.
The family would like to express their gratitude and appreciation to Emerald Coast Hospice, Sodalis Assisted Living and to her devoted caretaker, Melissa Sims.
Services will be held at 12:00 p.m., Monday, December 18, 2023 at St. Mark United Methodist Church, 2203 N. 12th Avenue, Pensacola, FL 32503 with visitation beginning at 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow at Bayview Memorial Park.
Pallbearers will be Larry Griffith, Tom Clupp, John Prumatico, Joe Harrison, David Allen Pittman, Don Burns, Daryl Taylor, Allen C. Williams and Steve Atkinson.
Honorary pallbearers will be Al Bruner, Peggy Bruner, David Pittman, Derel McDonald, Don Griffith, Richard Fillingim, Will T. “Bill” Lewis and Ed Yates.
In lieu of flowers, gifts to Emerald Coast Hospice or to St. Mark United Methodist Church in Janette’s memory would be appreciated.
