Born - February 27, 1956
Died - July 26, 2025
Mary Ann Smith, 69, of Pensacola, FL, passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, July 26, 2025, after a short illness. She leaves behind a legacy of strength, determination, faith, loyalty, tenacity, wit, and a zest for life.
She was born February 27, 1956, in Uniontown, PA to parents John Foster Hogsett and Theresa Ann Sullivan Hogsett. Because Mary Ann was seven years old when her Mother passed, her brother John and beloved sister-in-law Gloria provided support, love and direction in Mary Ann’s younger years and adult life.
She was the only girl surrounded by two older brothers and two younger: John, William, Richard, and Robert. She often talked about her childhood memories spent with her family on the Youghioheny River in Ohiopyle, PA and on the beach in Miami, FL.
She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, John T. Hogsett and Robert M. Hogsett. She is survived by two brothers, three sister-in-laws, three nieces, three nephews and numerous grand and great grand nieces and nephews.
Mary Ann loved America and served her country proudly in the United States Navy for ten years then retired from the United States Postal Service in 2013 with 30+ years of federal service. Three of her siblings also served proudly in the United States military. Mary Ann was one of the first females to work in an American coal mine in Green County, PA in the early 70’s.
Mary Ann loved spending time with friends and family at the beach, boating, golfing, dancing, listening to 60’s music, and grooming lawns & flowerbeds. She will be missed by many beloved friends who live on the Bayshore, coworkers at Jordan Street, fellow Navy sailors, childhood loved ones from her hometown of Uniontown, PA, and her many Pensacola friends.
Mary Ann never met a stranger, she made friends everywhere she went. She gave ball caps, umbrellas, and food to the homeless around Pensacola. Staff at Church’s and Sonny’s restaurants knew her as Ms. Mary since she came in most days to get their sweet tea. She checked in, asked people about their families, thanked them for coming to work, and often gave a few extra dollars to brighten their day.
She was always thinking of others. She tirelessly cared for her best friend’s Mom the last year of her life. She recognized people in need, helped many with their groceries, brought necessities and special treats to those homebound or in assisted living facilities, provided transportation to the store or the doctor, pulled stranded vehicles out of beach sand, jumped off dead batteries and gave people her jumper cables many times because they would need them again before she did. She put extended family and acquaintances on her family AAA plan so they would never be stranded.
When family and friends came to visit her in Florida she would plan activities to make their trip enjoyable. She did kind acts and gave small thoughtful gifts to others.
Mary Ann loved life and the people in it. She will be greatly missed by all. If she liked you she loved you with her whole heart. Know that if Mary Ann was your friend and sees you enter heaven, she will be there to welcome you and show you all there is to see.
There will be a funeral mass and reception to follow at St. Thomas More Catholic Church and Parish Hall in Mary Ann’s honor on Friday, August 8, 2025 at 10 AM.
