Richard Lee Hawthorne

1934-2015

Richard L. Hawthorne, Commander Retired, 80. Beloved father and grandfather passed away on Friday morning, February 27th 2015. Richard was born in Ohio in 1934 but was raised in West Palm Beach, Florida prior to enlisting in the United States Navy at age 17. He is preceded in death by his father John, mother Ann and daughter Susan. He is survived by his wife of 53 years Catherine Hawthorne, sons Richard (wife Teresa), Michael (wife Laurie) and five grandchildren, Lindsey, Matthew, Kyle, Emily and Christopher. Commander Hawthorne enlisted in the United States Navy in 1953. During his tenure he rose to the rank of Commander. His distinguished career included service in Vietnam, graduating from the Naval War College and the University of Rhode Island. He was stationed on numerous ships and land bases during his service. This included, the USS Wainwright, USS Shakori, NSD Subic Bay, NSGA Edzell Scotland, CNET Pensacola, COMSTOREREG Pensacola. He retired in 1983 after a final tour at Pensacola NAS.

The family will receive friends and family at Oak Lawn Funeral Home on Tuesday, March 2nd, 2015 from 2-4pm. There will be a small service at 3pm. Burial will be held at Arlington National Cemetery at a date yet to be determined.
