

Richard "Dick" Smothers, 79 of Pensacola, Florida, peacefully passed away at home on Saturday, October 10, 2015, surrounded by love.Dick was born in West Frankfort, Illinois on May 4, 1936, where he was one of nine children. He joined the U.S. Air force in 1954, and proudly served for 23 years. He married his best friend, Nancy Smothers, in 1955, and was a lifetime member of the Elk's Lodge. If you knew Dick, there were certain things you knew for sure: the unwavering pride he had in his heart for his family, his intense love for golf and the Yankees, and the fact that he wouldn't go anywhere without his "MacGyver kit" in his shirt pocket. He was generous, sensitive, and strong. Anyone who knew him was truly blessed.Dick is survived by his wife of almost 60 years, Nancy Smothers; three children- Diana Chapman, Richard Smothers, and Melissa Pitman; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Emerald Coast Hospice, 1555 N. Palafox Street, Pensacola, Florida 32501. Visitation Friday, October 23, 2015 from 10-11:00 AM with Memorial Service at 11:00 AM at Oak Lawn Funeral Home with inurnment at Barrancas National Cemetery to follow.
