He was born on September 25, 1927 in Saunemin, Illinois to Edwin and Irma (Ross) Smith. He married Evelyn Williams on August 26, 1962 at First United Methodist Church in Peoria Illinois.
Al is survived by his wife, Evelyn Smith of Peoria; daughters Karen (Craig) Seaton of Morton, and Elaine (Alan) Ferguson of Peoria, and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents Edwin and Irma Smith of Saunemin Illinois, sister Martha Davis of Rushville Illinois and his brother Sidney Smith of Pontiac Illinois, and grandson Ryan Ferguson.
Al enjoyed growing up in the small town of Saunemin where his dad was the mayor and his family owned the chicken hatchery. He was very athletic and excelled at basketball with his brother. After high school he served in the U.S Navy in 1945 and 1946 and later the reserves. He graduated from Illinois Wesleyan in 1949 with a degree in Accounting. After moving to Peoria, Alan began working for R.G. Letourneau and succeeding owners WABCO, Dresser, and Komatsu for 40 years.
Al was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He was an accomplished golfer and enjoyed many Peoria golf leagues. He was a member of The Iron Heads, Go Getters, Primer Timers and The Peoria Senior Golf League. He was a former member of the National Association of Accountants, a former volunteer for the Boy Scouts and a Junior Achievement advisor. He loved traveling and camping. He enjoyed taking his family on trips every summer. He traveled to all 50 states and enjoyed some overseas trips in his retirement. He was known for his great sense of humor and quick wit. He was an active longtime member of the First United Methodist Church in Peoria.
Funeral services will be Friday, Feb. 19, 2021 at 1 p.m. at the Davison-Fulton Woodland Chapel in Peoria. Visitation will be one hour prior to the services. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Alan’s life.
Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery in Peoria.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to Peoria First United Methodist. The family would like to thank staff at Lutheran Hillside Village and OSF Hospice for their loving care.
