Angeliki “Angeline” K. Lagouros of Peoria Heights passed away and fell asleep in the Lord June 4th at OSF Medical Center surrounded by her loving family. She was 91.
Angeline was born in Canton, Ohio on November 8, 1921 to Panayiotis and Maria Kanistras, both Greek immigrants. She moved to Greece at the age of 2 with her family and grew up in the beautiful village of Achihalo in the Peloponnesus. After the end of World War II and the Greek Civil War, she returned to Ohio in 1949, where she was reunited with her father and uncle. She obtained work in a candy shop, where she became the fastest candy wrapper in the history of the shop. She met and married Angelo P. Lagouros in 1953 in Canton, Ohio and they moved to Peoria that same year.
Angeline and Angelo had two sons, Parashos (Pete) and Frank. She volunteered in the cafeteria at her son’s school, Kelly Avenue Grade School for many years and was a member of All Saints Greek Orthodox Church, where she was active in the women’s group, Holy Cross Philoptochos (“Friends of the Poor”). She later became Secretary of Angelo’s Painting Company, a family business.
Angeline was a gracious and welcoming hostess and entertained many friends and family throughout the years. She loved cooking and baking and was renowned for her Greek pastries and homemade bread. She also enjoyed gardening and crocheting and made many baby blankets and other chrocheted gifts for her family and many friends. Everyone who had the pleasure to meet Angeline became friends for life. Her greatest “Joy” was her family and she was known as “YiaYia” (grandmother) not only to her own grandchildren, but also to many of their friends. She was a very religious woman deeply rooted in her faith who loved her Church and served as a volunteer on many fund raising projects throughout the years.
Angeline is survived by her sons, Dr. Pete Lagouros and his wife, Becky of Peoria Heights; Frank Lagouros and his wife, Katena of Peoria; grandsons Dr. Evan Lagouros and his fiancé, Dr. Meredith Violet of Canton, Ohio; Basil Lagouros of Chicago; Paul and Andrew Lagouros of Peoria Heights; Ollantay Scocos of Peoria Heights; her sister Vasiliki Paschos of Athens, Greece and many cousins, nieces, nephews and dear and wonderful friends.
