

D. Joan Herget, 93, of Peoria, passed away on Sunday, September 8, 2024 at Buehler Home in Peoria. She was born on July 11, 1931 in Monmouth, a daughter of Herbert R. Frazelle and Mildred I. (Larson) Frazelle. Joan married Raymond L. Herget on March 26, 1950 at Howett Street Christian Church in Peoria. He preceded her in death on November 1, 2012 in Peoria.
She was also preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Norma Jean Schisler; and her brother, James Frazelle.
Joan is survived by her four children, Steven (Lynn) Herget of Hendersonville, North Carolina, Linda Wilson of Morton, Karen (Steve) Frank of Peoria and Michael (Kay) Herget of South Point, Ohio; nine grandchildren, Jamie Herget and Jennifer (Eric) McKenzie, Jeffrey (Julie) Gilles, Mark (Leann) Gilles, Amanda (Matt) Sydney, Amy (Josh) Johnson, Scott (Tera Backlund) Frank, James (Kelly) Herget and Christopher (Marta) Herget; 17 great-grandchildren, Shannon Gilles, Abbey and Jacob Gilles, Jack, Jimmy and T.J. Herget, Conner and Bryce Frank, Nicholas and Billie Herget, Wyatt and Logan Kleinpeter, Louis, Nolan and Blythe Sydney and Dexter and Simon McKenzie; her sister, Judith (Jim) Gandy of Decatur; and several nieces and nephews.
She was very proud of her 62 years of marriage to Ray, of her four children and large extended family. Joan was a graduate of Manual High School (where she won awards for typing and shorthand), Illinois Central College, Bradley University and Western Illinois University, where she earned her Master's degree. Joan was a third grade teacher at Woodrow Wilson Grade School in Peoria, retiring in 1990.
Joan was a volunteer "pink lady" at Proctor Hospital for many years and later was a volunteer for OSF Hospice. She was a Sunday School teacher, a Cub Scout Den Mother and a leader for a Brownie Girl Scout Troop.
Joan was a member of Forrest Hill United Methodist Church in Peoria and the Peoria Area Retired Teachers Association.
Joan's funeral service will be at 11:00 am on Thursday, September 12, 2024 at Forrest Hill United Methodist Church. Rev. Aletha Wetherall will officiate. Her visitation will be from 10:00 am to 11:00 am also on Thursday at her church. Burial will take place in Swan Lake Memory Gardens in Peoria.
