She is survived by her daughter, Jennifer (Troy) Wheat of Mackinaw; four grandchildren, Brendan, Maia, Cora, and Connor; three sisters, Kim (Dwight Sessum) Knieriem, Trudy Thompson, and Rebecca (Ted) Quinn; three brothers, Jamie (Joanne) Giovanetto, Kevin (Linda) Giovanetto, and Rick (Pam) Giovanetto; as well as several cousins; nieces; and nephews.
She was preceded in death by one son, James Platt; and her parents.
Delaine worked at Caterpillar for 32 ½ years, primarily as a computer programmer on the Benefits systems. After retirement, she worked as a hobby and held jobs as the secretary at Mackinaw United Methodist Church, office work for a dentist and doctor’s office, and as a cashier at Casey’s. She was also a full time grandma to her four grandchildren, and often watched them while their parents worked.
Delaine was a dedicated member of the Mackinaw United Methodist Church and was loved by her church family. She volunteered as a greeter, usher, and communion server. Her faith in God was inspiring to all who knew her and she was excited to go to heaven.
Delaine was a wonderful friend to so many people. She was one of those people that everyone just loved. She was a caretaker to everyone she met and was considered a second mom to her siblings, co-workers, and friends.
The people Delaine loved most in the world were her family. She was so proud of her daughter, son-in-law, and grandchildren and surrounded them with so much love in their lives. She never hesitated to let her grandkids spend the night, give them some spending money, take them out to eat, the park, the zoo, or anywhere else they wanted to go. She was such a pivotal part of their lives and they feel her loss deeply. She loved to spoil her family and wouldn’t take no for an answer when showering them with gifts and love. Her absence leaves a big hole in all of our hearts.
The word that comes to mind when thinking about Delaine is Grace. She was filled with so much Grace no matter how difficult her life was. In the 4 ½ years since she has been battling ovarian cancer she never once was grumpy, angry, or sad for herself. She lived each day as if it was her last and shared her love with everyone she knew until her last breath. Even in her final days, she didn’t complain about pain, she just worried about everyone else taking care of her. What she didn’t realize is that it was an honor to be able to take care of her when she needed it just as she had been taking care of everyone for her entire life.
There are not enough words in the world to describe the tremendous loss of Delaine in this world. The world is a poorer place without her in it, but we all rejoice that she is walking on streets of gold in heaven, pain free, and reunited with all her loved ones who have passed before her, especially her son, James.
Delaine did not want a viewing so cremation rites have been accorded. Her visitation will be from 4:00pm-7:00pm on Saturday, January 25th and service on Sunday, January 26th, at 2:00pm. Both services will take place at the Mackinaw United Methodist Church in Mackinaw, IL. Pastor Jarrett Wells will perform the service.
In lieu of flowers, Delaine requests that charitable donations be made to either Mackinaw United Methodist Church or St. Jude.
