

He was born June 27, 1937 in Peoria to Frank and Evelyn (Huprich) Sumner. They preceded him in death.
He married Marcia Zweifel on December 30th, 1989 in Peoria. She survives along with two daughters: Sally (Phil Jordan) Sumner of East Peoria, Susan Beecher of East Peoria, one step-son, Don Klukan of Murray, KY, one brother, Frank (Suzette) Sumner of Brimfield, one grandson, Douglas (Amy) Byrne, one granddaughter, Kimberly Byrne, two step-grandchildren: Daniel Klukan, Dylan Klukan, one nephew, Brandon (Lonna) Sumner, one niece, Allyson (Patrick) Meyer, four great-nieces and two great-nephews.
Jerry attended Franklin Grade School, Peoria High School, Illinois Central College, and Bradley University.
He was a supervisor in the Caterpillar General Office Marketing Department and had 36 years of service, retiring in 1992.
Jerry enjoyed fishing the Mackinaw River for channel catfish. He caught bass, northern, walleye and crappie at his cabin in Minnesota. He fished the Snake River in Jackson Hole, WY for cut throat trout and enjoyed a summer in Alaska catching sockeye and king salmon. He spent 12 winters at his condo in South Padre Island, TX, fishing for sea trout and redfish.
Jerry Officiated High School basketball and football and is a member of the Peoria Officials Hall of Fame. He refereed High School basketball Districts, Regionals, Sectionals, and Super Sectional tournaments. Jerry officiated the three last Manual-Peoria High Turkey Day football games. He is a member of the Peoria AMVETS Post 64, Bartonville American Legion Post 979, Independent Sportsmen Club, Peoria High Alumni, and the Peoria Old Timers Baseball Association. Jerry was also a very passionate, avid “poker” card player. He looked forward to hosting weekly card games with his friends.
He was proud of his daughters' life accomplishments. He greatly appreciated help and assistance he later received from his daughters, brother/sister-in-law, nieces and nephews.
Cremation rites have been accorded. Please join the family for a celebration of Jerry’s life at Redeemer Lutheran Church on Wednesday, August 7, 2024 at 11 a.m. Visitation will be one hour prior to the services. Davison-Fulton Woolsey-Wilton Funeral Home in Peoria is in charge of arrangements.
