Kerry was the first-born son to Jim and Kathy Yocum, arriving with gusto on May 6, 1977. A trail blazer for the three siblings that followed him (Andy Yocum, Katie Yocum Musisi, and Alison Yocum Johanson), Kerry played the role of oldest brother well. He made a name for the Yocums (mainly good) as he matriculated through Dunlap School District, graduating from Dunlap High School in 1995 where he played tennis and made marching band look cool. Kerry had a wry sense of humor and genuine warmth that he wielded to diffuse tension and put others at ease. He attended Illinois Central College and spent his career working at Lynch Aluminum where he met and married the love of his life, Brandy.
Kerry built a family with Brandy that anchored him and became the center of his universe. Together with his son Reid and his daughter Morgan, he enjoyed cheering on the St. Louis Cardinals (an act of rebellion coming from a long line of Chicago Cubs fans), spending time lakeside, and hiking in Rocky Mountain National Park. In his children, Kerry instilled a love of sports and nature and a deep connection to family.
Kerry was preceded in death by his grandparents, Ray and Jean Gorman, and Ken and Olive Yocum, and his aunt Sandy Amato (Lee). Kerry is survived by his children’s mother, Brandy Yocum of Dunlap, his children, Reid and Morgan Yocum of Dunlap, his brother Andy Yocum of Chicago, his sisters Katie Yocum Musisi (Daniel) of Chicago and Alison Yocum Johanson (Dave) of Denver, his parents, Jim and Kathy Yocum of Dunlap, his Aunt Margie Rosenberger of Pittsboro, IN, and his Aunt Sandy and Uncle Ken Yocum of Medina, OH. He is also survived by loving nieces and nephews Olive and Desmond Musisi of Chicago and Kaya, Maxine, and Kendall Lynch of Dunlap.
Kerry’s legacy of generosity and caring is carried out through his donation to Gift of Hope. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to American Cancer Society.
