He was born on June 30, 1932 in Vermont, IL to Marvin and Delma (Haney) Strode. They preceded him in death as did his seven siblings, three sisters and four brothers.
Max married Shirley Walker on June 28, 1955 in Rushville, IL. They were married for 66 years and she preceded him in death. They honeymooned in Glenwood Springs, CO staying at his brother Eldon’s home. Shortly after arriving, Max left his wife with her new sister-in-law and three children while he helped his brother move a herd of cattle to Cow Camp.
Max is survived by his two daughters, Michelle Hyter of La Crosse, WI and Yvonne Strode of Peoria; one son, Bill (Theresa) Strode of Wyoming, IL; 7 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren. He enjoyed keeping meticulous record of his growing family and also researching his genealogy. He took pride in being a part of the 32 generation of the Strode family which dated to 1066 when the name originated.
Max proudly served in the U. S. Navy joking that he helped keep Key West and Cuba safe during the Korean Conflict. He was employed at Caterpillar Tractor Company for over 30 years, having invested in their stock for years; he took daily enjoyment of seeing how much his $17.00 dollar shares were currently worth.
A life-long Chicago Cubs fans, their World Series win in 2016 left him “not knowing exactly how he felt”. He also took great pleasure following the Fighting Illini football and basketball.
He enjoyed visiting Civil War sites and he and his wife spent two seasons volunteering for the US Forest Service at the forest fire lookout on St. Mary’s Peak in Montana.
Per his wishes, cremation rites have been accorded. There will be no services.
