Sue was born in Peoria on June 28, 1941, to parents Robert and Elizabeth (Rosse) Schenck. Upon graduation from Peoria High School in 1962, she enlisted in the United States Army. During her service she was stationed domestically as well as deployed in Europe where she served as a computer systems operator. She often spoke fondly of her deployment in France where she had the opportunity to travel with her friends as well as learn to snow ski in the Alps and play golf. She rose to the rank of Staff Sergeant Specialist E6, earning both the National Defense Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal, before her honorable discharge in 1967. Upon returning home, she married William Norval in February of 1968.
She is survived by her two daughters, Barbara (Paul) Gricus and Samantha (Eric) Dolen, her five grandchildren Casey Dolen, Mitchell (Anna) Dolen, Matthew (Danielle) Gricus, Justin Gricus, and Delaney Dolen, two sisters Joanna (Shelton) DeVary and Cindy Deterding, and one brother Joe Fifield.
She was preceded in death by her parents, 2 sisters and 1 brother.
Upon her marriage, Sue moved from Peoria to rural Manito, IL. Their first home allowed Sue to pursue her love of gardening and the outdoors. Each summer she spent countless hours cultivating a vegetable garden and tending to her apple orchard, grape vines, rabbits and chickens. She spent the fall canning vegetables and making preserves. She also enjoyed fishing, bowling and coaching her daughters’ softball teams; an avid sports fan, she loved to watch her beloved Cubs and Notre Dame Fighting Irish. As her daughters got older, she found time to rediscover her love of golf. She was an avid golfer, and upon retirement from DCFS in 2007, she began working for the Peoria Park District at Newman Golf Course in order to give back to the game she loved.
