Ada was born in Woodville, ON, on March 13, 1928, and moved to Peterborough as a young girl. She attended Prince of Wales Public School, followed by Peterborough Collegiate Vocational School (PCVS). Ada married the boy next door and the love of her life, Bill Hawthorne, on October 21, 1950. She became an operator with Bell Canada until Ellen was born in 1953, followed by Joyce in 1955. In 1952 Ada and Bill were invited to join St. Andrew’s United Church. Extremely capable and willing, Ada quickly became an active member, taking on numerous roles and responsibilities for over 60 years. In 1967 Ada joined the Ministry of Community and Social Services as a secretary until her retirement. She then became a dedicated volunteer at Keith Wightman Public School for several years. Family and friends were always a priority in her life while faithfully helping those in need. Whether baking, reading, cooking, travelling, sewing or entertaining, Ada lived life to the fullest. Her cheerful and positive demeanour was contagious. She laughed often and loved deeply.
A Celebration of Life will be held in the chapel at the Comstock-Kaye Life Celebration Centre, 356 Rubidge Street, Peterborough, on Friday, January 6, at 2:00 p.m., with a reception to follow. In memory of Ada, a donation to the Alzheimer’s Society of Canada would be appreciated by the family. Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.comstockkaye.com for the Hawthorne family.
