Amos, born on November 15, 1914 in Newbury, Ontario and was raised on the family farms at Tait?s Corners and Wardsville. He lived all his life in Ontario. He and Eleanor farmed for a couple of years near Cairo but left the farm after successive crop failures. He then worked for three years in the garden/greenhouse industry near Leamington before moving to Amherstburg to begin a career at SKD, an automotive parts supplier. For most of the 30 years at SKD, he also worked part-time as a farm labourer. After retirement in 1979, he and Eleanor moved to Sault Ste. Marie where they lived in a mobile home park north of the city. During retirement he filled his days working for Electrolux, collecting tickets at Soo Greyhound hockey games, helping Eleanor sell her handcrafts, growing gladiolas and building several additions to their home. In 2002, he and Eleanor moved to Peterborough to be near their daughter.
His personal life was centered on faith, family and friends. He was a lifelong and active member of the United Church of Canada. In his early years he attended youth groups and later he taught Sunday School and served as Superintendent. He was active as a member of the Board of Elders and as a Presbytery representative. When his children were young, most vacations included visits with relatives that strengthened family ties. For many years he was part of the Amherstburg Community Band Auxiliary. Once the children left home he and Eleanor broadened their horizons spending time in Florida for a few winters and traveling to most areas of Canada in their tent trailer visiting family and friends along the way. Amos was a person who liked people. His enthusiasm, friendliness and outgoing manner made it easy for him to socialize and everyone he met soon became a friend.
