Feb 28, 1967 - July 17, 2023
Our dear Jacquie passed away peacefully in the early hours of Monday July 17, 2023 at 56 years old following a period with cancer. Her beloved partner Brent Caverly was at her side at Peterborough Regional Health Centre. She is survived by her sons Jacob Mellor and Dillon Mellor. She will be forever loved and missed by members of the Caverly, Mellor and MacDonald families, and many caring friends.
Jacquie was born and raised in southwest Toronto. After 2 years at Michael Power-St. Joseph's High School, she transferred as a music major to the recently opened Etobicoke School of the Arts, where she built life-long friendships. A talented multi-instrumentalist, she entered the prestigious jazz program at Humber College, but decided a few months later that was not her path.
Jacquie's true calling was working with children. She soon entered George Brown College, graduating as an Early Childhood Educator in 1991. Over her 30 year career, her passion for children shaped the lives of countless families in a positive way, and left her imprint on many colleagues. In her final weeks she said of her career, "I would do it for free".
The last 10 years of her life were sweetened by the love of her life Brent Caverly. She said she could not have believed that she could love one person this much. Their life together in Bowmanville was a celebration of both major events - family weddings, the arrival of grandchildren - and everyday pleasures, like a fine meal, their garden, reading the New York Times and their ritual post-workday martini.
From her ready laugh to her striking looks to her creative style, Jacquie made an impression wherever she went. Her infectious joy inspired the best in every person she met. She never stopped reaching out and connecting with people from all walks of life. Jacquie's special brand of magic was to reflect your own shine back at you. She was endlessly curious and interested. She leaves a big empty place in our hearts and in our world.
Jacquie completely savored life to the last. While surrounded by her man and her sons, caring family and friends, she enjoyed the feel of rain on her skin, the bliss of banana popsicles, and bodacious music in her final days.
Here are words Jacquie shared as she approached her passing:
Love radiates Jove Fear radiates Fear
Be kind to yourself and others whenever possible. Enjoy the moment
Be the moment
Show up and be present
Look for gratitude because it is all around you at all times

Jacquie's final wish was that her ashes be laid to rest in British Columbia, a place that felt like home. A memorial gathering will take place near Peterborough at a later date.
