Peacefully surrounded by her family, on Friday, July 5, 2013, at St. Joseph’s at Fleming in Peterborough, at the age of 85. Predeceased by her parents Fred and Jean Hills. Jean was the beloved wife of Alexander “Sandy” Fleming for 60 years. Loving mother of Ian, Patricia, and Heather and her husband Mark Ranger. Dear grandmother of Jacob and Benjamin Ranger. She is also survived by her cousins Margaret Strickland & Beverley Fortye Armstrong. Jean will be missed by many other relatives and friends especially by Daphne Molson who was so good to her in her last years. Jean took quiet pride in the accomplishments of her family. Graduate of Trinity College, Toronto, and as a mature student in the 1980s, a graduate of Trent University. Long time member of St John’s Anglican Church. Like her parents Jean was a member of the Peterborough Golf and Country Club. When golfers found themselves in the middle of a downpour while finishing the 3rd hole she would invite them in for tea and shelter. In addition to her dedication to her family Jean enjoyed volunteering with a variety of community based organizations. She served as a President and Treasurer of CAA Peterborough and Big Brothers Peterborough. She also volunteered at Hutchinson House, was a Charter member of the Chairman’s Club of the Otonabee Region Conservation Authority, helped to sew numerous costumes for many ice shows at the Peterborough Figure Skating Club and enjoyed recording books for the blind at Trent. She loved to canoe at Chemong and Stony Lakes, play the piano, read and travel. In later years walks in the Peterborough Ecology Park gave her much enjoyment. Jean was years ahead of her time as an advocate for the stewardship and good husbandry of the earth. A very special thank you to Patricia Fleming, Marta Takuski, Marilyn Young and to all of the front line workers who provided Jean with such loving care during her last years. A Memorial Service will be held at ST. JOHN'S ANGLICAN CHURCH, 99 Brock Street, Peterborough, on Thursday, August 1, 2013 at 11:00 am. Reverend Mary Bell-Plouffe officiating. A reception will follow at the church. Arrangements entrusted to Comstock Funeral Home & Cremation Centre, 356 Rubidge Street, Peterborough. In lieu of flowers donations to the Greenup Ecology Park (greenup.on.ca) in Peterborough or to the charity of your choice would be appreciated. Online condolences may be made at www.comstockfuneralhome.com.
