I've only learned of John's passing, almost a year later...And like others, I met John in 1975 when I joined the Champlain College/Trent community. John, Brian, Katie, Joan, David, Ray, Joannie, Chris and so many others just out of High School and living away from home for the first time were part of a wonderful group that anchored us for the next several years...John was a quiet person who said little but saw everything and when he spoke in his gentle way, you listened.  John established and got a good number of us involved in Trent Radio in its early years and I am so pleased that it remains a lasting legacy to his passion and talents.  To him, now gone and far away....remembered of though it were yesterday....

I found out about John's death only last weekend and have wondered ever since if 6 months late is too late to express my sorrow to his family.  I have decided that it is never too late to honour and remember a human as remarkable as John.
I met John on our first day at Trent  in 1975. There were 3 first years sharing a floor at Champlain, John, Katie, and myself.  We became friends and called ourselves the First Floor Commune.  It was a wonderful time of my life and John was very much a part of that.  I remember a kind, sweet, somewhat shy guy with a great sense of humour and a passion for radio. 
I have not seen John since January or February of 1978 and it is a testament to the kind of man he was that still, after all these years, I remember him with such affection.
I am so sorry that his light has dimmed so soon.

I originally bumped into John during our first week together at Trent University in 1975.  JK quickly became like a big brother to me.  For the next five years, we were almost inseparable: at Trent Radio, working at CHEX, and as house-mates on Dublin Street, on Parkhill Road and for a year in the village of Warsaw.

As first year students, we both signed up to join Trent Radio and were astonished to discover that most of the group’s leaders were stepping down.  Within months, we had taken over, he as Manager and I as Program Director.  We recruited a community of students, we experimented with studio recording, we organized concerts, and we listened to music.  So so much music.

We listened to music in the houses we shared, in his parents’ basement in Ottawa, at his brother’s house-parties in Nepean, and at his cottage in the Gatineau.

We went to the CRTC offices in Ottawa to learn about foreground programming and community license applications.  We helped establish the Ontario Campus Radio Organization.  And we made plans to build Trent Radio its own studio.  I wanted it to be on campus attached to Lady Eaton College.  He wanted it to be in town near Peter Robinson College.  I won, briefly, but he was right and soon established the wonderful Trent Radio House on George Street.

After five years working so closely together, I decided it was time to leave Peterborough to climb the career ladder in radio news.  My then-girlfriend Jane and I found jobs, first at my home in Winnipeg, then at CBC in Ottawa.  John and I drifted apart, but he honoured us by serving as usher at our wedding.  In recent years, we and our kids loved dropping in to visit John and Yvonne, then eventually Iris and Cora too. 

John was a builder.  He built friendships, communities, organizations, events, venues and his wonderful family.  I am so thankful that our paths intersected and merged together for a few years.  I know I am a better person for it.
