

ELLIS, Joyce Alice (Herbert), W.R.N.S. WW II - At Canterbury Gardens, Peterborough, passed away on Friday, September 29, 2017, in her 93rd year. Beloved wife of the late John Robert Ellis. She was predeceased by her parents Mr. & Mrs. Edward James Herbert of Cirencester, Gloucestershire, England. Joyce was the youngest of three children, predeceased by her sister Amy (Sid) Mansfield of Cambridge, England, and brother Hugo John (Mary) Herbert of Cirencester, Gloucestershire, England, Mary & Pete Cox of Toronto, and Doris Snook of London. She will be sadly missed by her nephew William Mansfield (Patricia) of England, nephew Tim (Lynn) Herbert of England, niece Susan Herbert of England, niece Merridy Cox-Bradley of Toronto, nephews Christopher and Thomas Mee, stepson Rod Wylie (Lee) and granddaughter Kathy Slinkard of Florida, goddaughter Judith Bain of Wiltshire, England, and dear friends, Janie and Grant Heffernan, Gregory and Geoffrey Heffernan, Fran and Tim Benson, Maureen and Vern Mulhall. Joyce was born in Kelfield, Saskatchewan and moved to England with her family prior to World War II. She was educated in Kelfield, Saskatchewan and Cirencester, Gloucestershire before joining the W.R.N.S. as a bomb marker and plotter. After the war Joyce was employed by the Southern Electricity Board in England and Canadian General Electric Company in Toronto, Guelph, and Peterborough. She was married to John at Hart House Chapel, University of Toronto in 1955, living their married life in Guelph and Peterborough. In retirement, they enjoyed winters in Kansas and Florida, spring bird watching in Ontario and summers at the Cox summer home on Lake Temiskaming, and the Heffernan Cottage on Coon Lake. Joyce was active in community work, volunteering in the Medical Library of the Peterborough Civic Hospital, the Community Concert Association, the Peterborough Historical Society, and the Hutchison House. She and John also established the Joyce A and John R Ellis Foundation to assist various charities and institutions in Peterborough. A memorial service will be held in the Chapel of the Comstock-Kaye Life Celebration Centre, 356 Rubidge Street, Peterborough, on Tuesday October 24th, 2017 at 1:00 p.m. Interment at Little Lake Cemetery and reception to follow at the Comstock-Kaye Life Celebration Centre. In memory of Joyce, donations may be made to Hospice Peterborough (Hospice Care Centre Campaign – a place for people living with a life threatening illness, caring for someone or grieving.) or St John the Evangelist Anglican Church, Peterborough or a charity of your choice.
