Dear Barb,

I stumbled on this book today and I am sure that you were touched by the  comments.

My appreciation of Larry began in his Lakefield days, when a casual visit to the store turned into a regular happening. No  other LCBO store had the friendly atmosphere where "serve yourself" came with an encyclopedic knowledge of Canadian wine.

The trips to Niagara and the wine tastings were much enjoyed by Gregory, Susan and myself. Their expanding wine cellars are based on the appreciation of wine that Larry stimulated and we miss him.

We won't forget him.

Larry was a good friend to the EOAWC, which he supported in so many ways, including running the website. He helped make the annual competitions really interesting and fun. He was a fine wine maker and all of us will miss him, particularly his friends in the Sons of Baccus wine club. Jean and I learnt a lot from him, and we will remember his lively company and ever friendly smile. We were saddened to hear of his death. We are sorry for your loss.

I had the unforgettable pleasure of first meeting Larry 14 years ago during one of his many visits to Stoney Ridge where I worked at the time. During my career in the wine industry I was periodically delighted by his appearances at various tasting rooms and industry events. Larry was always armed with a clever quip and a twinkle in his eye. He was one of VQA's pioneering advocates and his work in this industry will never be forgotten. Our deepest condolences for your loss.

I was so sorry to hear of Larry's increasing decline as the fall progressed.  It has been many years, but I will always remember Larry as "the Don Cherry of the Canadian Wine industry".  What a character!  How he kept us all on our toes at the blind tastings at your house, I can see him unveiling the "most voted for" Chardonnay of the evening with a brilliant (and devious) smile to show us all that his friend Jim Warren had indeed produced the one that beat out some fancy French vintage.  He would do the same for Allan's riesling, Klaus' Cab Franc, John's 31F.....
He brought us all together on those bus trip's in the 90's....and you crazy people following him to Niagara to work in the fields picking ice wine grapes, even if it was the day after Christmas.
His legacy will live on.

His voice for the Ontario wine industry, sense of humour and kindness for all will be greatly missed.

 I wish to offer my sincere condolences to Larry's family following his untimely decease.  I first met him in the early '90s when he was the moving force behind the formation of a wine tasting society in Peterborough.  This organization flourished for several years and attracted many area residents who were fond of wine.  It gave them exposure to much expertise on the subject, Larry's own not least, provided wide experience in blind tasting and assessment of various vintages, and much just plain fun.  Participation was a most enjoyable experience to all concerned.  During that time I developed not only great respect for Larry's knowledge of the subject but a sincere personal liking.  While managing the Lakefield LCBO at the time he introduced a practice of labelling the positions of various vintages with most informative descriptions of the wines.  When this was discontinued by the LCBO I wrote to LCBO chairman Andrew Brandt supporting this innovation and describing Larry as a real asset to the organization. (I believe Ivan Bateman wrote along similar lines at the same time.)  I am sure he was greatly missed by the LCBO when declining health forced his early retirement, and upon his passing he is missed by all who were fortunate enough to know him personally.

 Although my acquaintance with Larry is relatively recent, that with his family dates from my early childhood.  Growing up in the north end of the city I attended Queen Alexandra School with three Patersons of my generation.  Max graduated a year before me, but Joan was with me through my years at Queen Alex and graduated with me in 1938.  She and I also graduated the same year from Guelph in 1947.  I did not know Murray during my school years, but our common interests in local history brought us together and I have been in contact with him sporadically in more recent years.

 I join Larry's many friends in expressing my great sadness at his loss.

My sincere condolences to Larry's family. Larry took in my son , Marc-Andre, and myself into his group of friends because he new Marc-Andre loved to fish. He was such an interesting person to be around for his obvious joy of the outdoors , his great passion for wine and his kind personality. Dear Barb and family.  I am so sad to hear of Larry's death.  My mind is filled with great memories of working vines in Niagara to crushing grapes in your driveway to spending hours in your home. Larry's dedication to his fellow wine makers and friends will be greatly missed here on earth. He now becomes the master wine maker in heaven. Just think of all the chocolate wine they'll have where he's going. Larry have a party.

So sad to hear of the loss of a wonderful man.  A person who had great integrity towards all the things he had accomplished.  He was strong in his beliefs and was a great advocate for Canadian producers, promoting the best in quality grown in our homeland.  It will be a great loss not to hear what Larry has to say next.  With all that supported his life and his work maybe we can continue what he always wanted, for us to be true to what is around us (family and friends) and to appreciate what every day holds with a glass of lovely Canadian wine in hand.

Dear Barb and Family, although I have only known you and Larry for a very short time, I am so very sorry to hear of your terrible loss, we will all miss him so very much. Wine tasting and get together's will never be the same without "the little fat whino".

I have many recollections of Larry from my first meeting him in the Omeemee store to the last phone call two months ago in which we solved most of the Ontario wine industry problems, again.
He was always so insightful, inspiring and oh so decent.
Coffin Ridge would not exist without the quiet support, the long car trips to various meetings and generous conversation.
