Born in Aberdeen in July 1938 Jean trained to be a children’s nurse at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary qualifying in the summer of 1959. She met John on 05 November 1961, and they married on 27 July 1963. They started their married life living in Buckie, a small town on the Moray Firth coast of Scotland. Their daughter, Sue, was born in December1964 and their son, Scott, in May 1968.
When Scott was just four months old Jean and John took the momentous decision to leave Scotland to emigrate to Canada. The summer before they left, they took a memorable trip around the UK in a Mini with a tent strapped to the roof. They discovered the Lake District which they both fell in love with and as a result stayed longer than they had intended experiencing the worst thunderstorm they had ever seen or heard!
Arriving in Prince Rupert, British Columbia, Canada in August 1968 they were immediately welcomed by the wonderful community where they made their home whilst John taught at the local high school. After a year in Prince Rupert, John was offered a job in Victoria on Vancouver Island, which became their home for the next 45 years. Whilst in Victoria Jean returned to children’s nursing working at the Royal Jubilee Hospital. She also worked at a friend’s bakery, a job her family enjoyed almost as much as she did!
In August 2013 Jean and John decided to return to the UK and lived with their Scott and his wife, Lisa, in Yorkshire, England. During this time, they were able to reconnect with their friends and family in Scotland which was a joy for all involved.
In May 2016 with their love of Canada as strong as it had ever been and with a desire to spend more time with their daughter Sue, her husband Wayne and their two sons Ryan and Mitch; Jean and John moved back, this time to live in Peterborough, Ontario. Jean spent five very happy years in Peterborough surrounded by her family and passed away very peacefully on 15 June 2021 at Riverview Manor.
She will be lovingly remembered by her devoted husband John; as a wonderful mother by Sue and Scott; as a generous and caring mother-in-law by Wayne and Lisa; as an adoring Grandmother to Ryan and Mitchand as a loving Great-grandmother to Finn.
