We have lost our beloved Mom, Gran and Great Gran who slipped away from us early Easter Monday at the Toronto General Hospital on April 6, 2026. She was surrounded by her loving family during her final few days.
Born in Dunoon Scotland, and then living in Glasgow, she came to Canada in 1952 where her family settled in Peterborough Ontario. It’s here that she met Guido De Carlo, the love of her life. They married in1954.
It was after son Brian and daughter Carol Anne were born, that Mary chose to go back to work and was soon hired by Peterborough Guns Ltd. With great determination and a lot of hard work, Mary continually took on added responsibilities; eventually becoming the first female President in the industry in all of North America. She eventually became the owner of Peterborough Guns Ltd., Lakefield Arms Ltd and Lakefield Sales Ltd.
Mary was a woman of deep faith and believed it was important to be “generous of heart”. Throughout her life she always made time to give back. She was a Governor of Quota Club International (for the hearing impaired) and Director of the Peterborough Chamber of Commerce. After serving on Kawartha Golf and Country Club’s Board for several years, she then did two terms as the club’s Treasurer and then served for 2 years as President.
A few years after Guido’s passing, Mary moved into the Royal Gardens Retirement home. She loved her suite on the independent floor and the company of her many friends. It truly was home to her until the very end.
Mary was predeceased by her husband Guido to whom she was married for 52 years. She was a loving mother to Brian De Carlo (Kathy) and Carol Anne Lindsay (Scott); adored by her grandchildren Ryan (Jenna), Jeffrey (Michelle), Charlie, Chris (Holly), Olivia (Liam). She also cherished every moment with her great grandchildren Scarlet (Ryan and Jenna) and Bennett (Jeffrey and Michelle). Mary was a dear sister to Francis Moore Finnighan (Isobel), predeceased by her sister Aileen Hendry, as well as aunt to many nieces and nephews. A special mention of her cousin Lionel Ownsworth who visited every week often taking her for drives in the countryside or occasionally to get her some French fries.
Mary lived life well and set a great example for everyone who knew her. She will be remembered always and sorely missed.
A special thank you to the wonderful staff at the Royal Gardens Retirement Home who treated Mom like ‘part of the family’. We also can’t thank enough the wonderful team on Toronto General Hospital’s Internal Medicine floor who provided Mom with exceptional compassion and care.
A Memorial Mass will be held at St. Alphonsus Liguori Church,1066 Western Avenue, at 11 am on Saturday May 2nd. A reception will follow at 12:30 pm at the Kawartha Golf and Country Club, 777 Clonsilla Avenue. In lieu of flowers, donations to a charity of your choice would be appreciated.
