Olive died peacefully on February 22, 2026 at the age of 97 after a long and happy life. Predeceased by her beloved and loving husband Bob and her companion Howard Vaughn. Olive was the middle daughter of parents Charles and Ferne Mather and her siblings, Eileen Schweier (Oscar), Tom Mather (Doris), Anna Lees (George), and Jack Mather (all deceased). She will be remembered with much love by her children Jacquie (Bill) and Jeff (Donna), as well as her many nieces, nephews and cousins. Olive was born in 1928 on a farm at Mathers Corners, Ontario. Her early life included family time on the farm, school at a one-room schoolhouse at Mathers Corners and many church activities in Keene. In her early twenties, Olive and her friend Jean Dale (Drummond) embarked on a bus trip across Canada and the US at a time when it wasn't at all common for young women to be so adventuresome. Olive worked in Calgary, Toronto, and then Peterborough where she met her husband Bob at a badminton league. Olive thoroughly enjoyed her life raising her children and volunteering for many organizations. Olive loved to cook, and together with Bob, they often entertained family and friends. Olive was very active and enjoyed sports including skiing, curling, golf and hiking. Olive had many friends and kept in touch with the friends she met throughout her life including those in Burlington, Ontario where Olive and Bob lived for 13 years. In later years, Olive and Bob returned to Peterborough, where they lived together until Bob passed away in 1998. Olive became active at Mark Street United Church where she met her special friend Howard Vaughn. Olive and Howard enjoyed many years travelling together throughout Canada, the US, Europe and the Caribbean. After 20 years living at the Westwind Condos, Olive decided it was time to move to Royal Gardens retirement home. Here she continued to be active and enjoyed the many events, especially music, until her last days. The family extends much gratitude to the staff of Royal Gardens for their care, friendship and compassion over the last 4 years. Cremation has taken place and visitation will be held at Comstock-Kaye Life Celebration Centre, 356 Rubidge St., Peterborough on Saturday, March 14th from 1:00 - 3:00 p.m. followed by a Service of Remembrance. Interment will be held in the spring at Upper Keene Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, a donation to the Canadian Cancer Society, Parkinson Canada or a Charity of your choice would be appreciated.
