It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Pete Oussoren, who departed this world at 6:45 am on January 31, 2024. Pete, 81, was an extraordinary person with a big heart whose life was marked by resilience, a strong sense of justice, and an unwavering commitment to his God, family, and community.
Pete was born on a dairy farm in Breukelen, the Netherlands, on August 9, 1942, during World War II. Son of Marinus and Jansje Oussoren, he was the youngest of six children. He is survived by one sister who lives in the Netherlands.
Pete was the devoted and beloved husband to Willy van Walbeek - Oussoren and the committed father to the late Carina Oussoren Schuurman (Derek), Anja Oussoren, the late Marco Oussoren, Peter Oussoren (Julie) and the late Hans Oussoren (Rachel). Pete has ten grandchildren and currently one great-grandson.
Passionate about farming, Pete and Willy dedicated their lives to producing food for the world. In 1981, they immigrated with their children to Canada to continue this calling. In both the Netherlands and Canada, Pete always sought to live faithfully to his God with vision, grit, and hard work. He was a problem solver always up for a challenge. His dry sense of humour was never far from the surface, even in his final days.
Pete kept his focus on what matters through daily scripture reading and prayer, weekly church attendance, and a dependence on the Creator. Whether he was working on his farms, serving as elder or deacon in church, mentoring young employees, serving on school boards, buying, selling and socializing at auctions, dedicating quality time with family and friends, traveling to fascinating destinations in the world, engaging in farm sector meetings, or reading farm and church papers – he aimed to serve his Lord in all things.
Conversations with Pete were characterized by wit, humour, depth of insight, straight-talk, and a deep interest in a wide range of subjects. Not one for small talk, he will be remembered for his desire to understand the complexities of this world while keeping a perspective that kept him grounded.
He testified that his Redeemer lives. He rested assured that “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith” (2 Timothy 4:7).
